Anybody ever replace the rather "bulbous" '59 El Camino roof with the beautiful roof/windshield combo from an Impala Sport Coupe of the same vintage? I've always pondered the possibilities... Anybody wanna do some digital bodywork on this one? Thanks -ns ps- I would NEVER condone the hacking up of a perfectly fine Sport Coupe... I'm thinking maybe one that was wiped out in the side/back area BAAAAAD!
There is a 59 elky here in Houston that has the 59 sport coupe windshield and hardtop doors. Looks pretty good. TP
Well, its easy to find a rotty sport coupe, but I'd think the way to go would be a 4dr hardtop windshield/roof with the 2dr ht doors.
A buddy did a Corvair Lakewood wagon turned El Camino, using the Corvair 4dr roof overhang roof, looked pretty good.
I'm almost certain that if you put a hardtop windshield in an El Camino you chop it a couple inches in the process. in almost every instance ever since 1950 hardtop glass has been shorter than "post" glass
Understood... I just know when people start grafting roofs the temptation to whack a couple of EXTRA inches is there. I'm not a huge fan of chopped cars after about '54... it's all subjective of course. -ns
No, the 4dr hardtop,2 dr hardtop and convert windshields are 2" shorter than the sedan and wagon and elky windshields. factory chop built in. TP
After seeing the photos above it does seem that the hardtop windshield, doors, and rear section of the halo roof from a four door hardtop would be far more attractive, but probably not different enough from the stock roof to be worth all the work for most people. Just to add a little more food for thought, what about a sectioned down rear roof section from a 64 two door sedan used in conjunction with the hardtop windshield and doors? Got a convertible for your parts source? By moving up the later roof's rear pillar to the door line, the roof looks like it would be compact enough to be practical to use the windshield frame and top header from a convertible a make it a liftoff.
I like this (seems like the roof lines compliment the fins.) Much better than this if a comment from the peanut gallery counts.
------------------------------------------------------------------ How much is that on a5x7 photo? lol
At this point I'm thinking: LEAVE WELL ENOUGH ALONE! '59 El Caminos look just fine outta the factory! Which is cool with me... slam that shit, make it noisy, and have fun! Thanks again to everybody who's chimed in! -ns
