What color is the electrode on the plugs? Light tan? Brown? Black?

And did you finish setting the points? Rotor back on? Cap back on?

  9. Can you take pics and post with your phone? Just a thought
Plugs sound fouled from misadjusted points

New plugs look a little "ashy". Heavy?...or just super light?

    Rotor and cap.. Back ON...

  12. Yeah, if you installed the points right out of the box, there should be a BIG difference already.

I would've had him start the motor to check for an improvement, but he's got the plugs out, so we'll deal with that right now and then run the engine after the plugs are back in.

Black and sooty. That alone can make an engine run like shit. There's a reason for the soot...either lots of blow-by (burning oil) or rich fuel mixture. Have you noticed smoke from the tailpipe? What color?...blueish? black? A heavy exhaust smell?

Regardless, you're gonna have to take a few minutes and clean the plugs. Have you got some carb cleaner or something similar? Put the plugs in a small jar or can. Put some solvent in there. Carb cleaner is preferred. Got a wire brush? Or at least an old toothbrush? Try to get the bristles down in the sparkplug as you clean them. After you've cleaned 'em up as good as you can, and driec them off, take a piece of fine sandpaper and run it between the electrodes a couple two or three times. Got compressed air? Blow them off good after the solvent and again after the sandpapering. Then re-gap the plug.

  25. The soot just wiped off easy right?
Was running rich from poor points gap.
It happened to me first time I tried to "adjust" my points on the old 216 lol

Yeah, chances are that the plugs are ok...but we're just trying to cover our bases here. Oh...and make extra work for Sloppy...lol. He's got his hands full...following our bs, taking pics, typing replies, in addition to doing the work!

Sloppy, you make a judgement as to how much you gotta clean the plugs. If blackness was real light, no real need to use solvent...just clean 'em a bit with the sandpaper and re-gap to .040.
