Is it possible to replace the front differential seal on a 1957 Chev rear end with the "pumpkin" still in the housing? Are there any special tools required? How hard is it to get the old seal out without damaging anything, etc.?

  2. No problem changing the seal. Remove the yoke retainer nut. Remove the yoke. Screw driver to get the seal loose and off. Reassemble. Problem for me is getting the correct torque on the yoke retainer nut. To much and you crush the sleeve. Can change the pinion and ring setting.

You can get the nut off with a good impact. Mark the nut and shaft, with a punch, so it goes back to the right spot when you zip the nut back on. It's called a pinion seal. If you're unsure about it take it to a shop and have them do it, *should* be fairly inexpensive.

Ok here is an online manual. Take a look at page 18. It should guide you through the process.
