I have searched through past threads not really finding an updated answer...please forgive me for starting a new thread. I am looking for the next best replacement for a gas tank for my 55. It came without a tank. I have completley finished the brakes and want to go for a good drive without the fuel hose in the gas can. I am looking to go as original as possible for the gas tank...or the next closest thing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

He trouble is finding those years and I haven't been able to find a repop. So anything close to it .I'd like to keep the fuel door and fill it up through there.

sure looks to me like the filler door is close to the same as a 55 chevy, even if it were off a little it would be safe to weld on a brand new tank to move it. I see 55 repop tanks on ebay for 75 bucks.....

i just went threw this with my 55, there are no direct replacement repops at the moment. i found a good original tank and had it redone. the only other option is someone is making a universal fit for mid 50's gm. looks close but you would need to take measurements to be sure. do a google search and it sould come up. good luck hope this helps....john

"Tanks" has a universal tank for 50's GM cars. The filler can be had in 3 different positions. I bought one for my 49 Buick and it worked out perfect.

These are photos of my new-to-the-fleet 1955 Pontiac Star Chief 2dr hardtop gas tank. I hope they help.

That is actually a big help! Can you tell me the distance of the filler hole on each side?

    Yes go here; http://www.tanksinc.com/index.cfm/p...t_id=130/category_id=133/mode=prod/prd130.htm

Tank’s, Inc. B1 series of tanks are available in 4 models that are basically the same with the exception of the filler neck location These tanks fit a wide range of cars in the 1941-54 Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile and more vintage models. Although they may not be an exact replacement with slight to no modification they will work in many GM applications where a 0-30 Ohm fuel sender is used.

Got a new tank in last week. Hopefully if the rain stops, it will go in this weekend!
