I'm thinking about running '55 dog dish hub caps and early '50s beauty rings on black rims on my '55 Bel Air 2dr sedan. I think they'd be a great combo as opposed to the full covers. I'm having a hard time finding them used, as I'm on a budget,. Many irons in the fire require that I spend frugally. Any one running these and willing to post pics before I hunt down the caps?

  4. ...I was kinda gonna do the same, had these whitewall tires mounted up and put em on our 55,...was gonna run dog dish caps, no trim rings...but ended up the new kid who mounted my tires broke a belt on one tire and now it's got a big egg on the inside sidewall, dang....the rear rims are 15X7's reversed, the kid tried mounting them from the wrong side...

I like the stock "hub caps" on 55-56 Chevrolet's; beauty rings would only add to the "look". That's what I vote for. Even better, is "true chrome reverse rims" (NOT smoothies) with the stock hub caps. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

I agree with Butch56, Cap & Rings I really like that look..

I've built over a dozen cars, (32 ford to an OT 69 Chev Shortbox) and just about every one has sported caps & rings. Even My avatar has them:D

  7. No on the beauty rings, caps only.
My next tri-five Chevy will have Cragar SS wheels (just like my last one had), which are my favorite on these cars.

Can you say sleeper, as in YAWN! The sad part is by the time you pay what some hoarding jerk thinks a set of caps and some nice early 50's rings are worth you could by a nice set of mags at the swap meet. But then again by the time you pay what some hoarding jerk wants for mags at a swap meet you could buy new mags! lol Larry

I'll add to the no rings, I think small caps on cars are way cool!

"Back in the day" nobody ran the stock hubcaps, but almost everybody ran black wheels & baldies … mags & chrome wheels came around '65 & later … of course, that was here. Your part of the country might have been completely different.

Here we called them Baby Moons, but like you said the hub caps where gone 10 seconds after you got it and the wheels where painted Black! Never saw red wheels on a car till the 90's lol Larry

    Hello,

Those beauty rings and small hubcaps are the perfect look for any Chevy or hot rod build. They give the hot rod a simple, but cool look without spending a ton of money on “mag wheels.” At the time, in high school we would rather put on those little center hubcaps and beauty rings instead of spending money on other flipper style steel wheels (American Mag copies) or other brands on the market at the time.

My rims were 14 inch stock Chevy and I could not get the look I wanted with what money was there, so I opted for just the center hubcaps from Chevy. Then I was able to get the beauty trim rings for a full chrome style wheel look. Since there was no money for actual chrome reversed wheels, this took its place.

These were the hit of the day and stayed that way until I got a set of 15 inch Buick Skylark Wire Wheels for a complete make over of my 58 Impala in 1964.

The above beauty ring and small center hubcap was on a GMC Suburban found locally in South Orange County. It was one of the coolest looks that I had seen in recent times. Functionality was evident as the wheels had slots in them for cooling, but was so subtle that it was not noticeable.

The look of a classic 50’s car with white walls or even just simple blackwalls (and this small hubcap/beauty trim ring set up) is definitely affordable and stylish.

Note: Out of 3 Chevy sedans in our high school group, the 55 had black rims and small hubcaps, the 56 post had chrome reversed and the 57 Bel Air had black rims and center hubcaps. All in total, the 55-58 Chevy sedans had 1 out of 4 that had chrome reversed wheels.

Thanks for all the input guys. After seeing the cap and ring combo, I think I will go for the combo. Now to find reasonably priced used '55 dog dishes!

No trim rings, please. Maybe a pinstripe whitewall tire?

My turn, black wheels, caps, no rings BUT you must have the nose low and the rear about 1" to 1-1/2" higher than the front AND a deep throaty dual exhaust with some compression thump....

The rear tires have to be wide enough that they barely fit into the wheel wells with skinny fronts.

When its sitting quietly people will look at it and think "must be a sleeper" then once you start it they go "yep its a sleeper!"

I like the caps and rings look but I really like the chrome reverse and stock small cap look on certain cars. Had that look on the only car I ever bought new with black walls and got a lot of compliments on it.
