I'm just curious if you ran the tire pressure in between somewhere between fishtailing to the 330' mark and bogging. Maybe about 10-15 feet of "moving" tire spin? KUDOS on the 4 speed!
Don't need any excuses for 11 second passes on street tires through mufflers. Car looks like it was leaving straight and not trying to bounce around. That's a good foundation to work with. What rear gears do you have? Seems like I remember them being pretty steep. If 25 psi was spinning and 15 was bogging, try somewhere close to 20. Get those first couple of spin rotations out of the hole to keep the revs up and then hook hard. Worth a try before you go changing 1st gear or messing with pinion angles. That video gives me that pit of my stomach, jealous, got to get me freakin' car done feeling. But in a good way!
that car is rad with the primer spots and all. I dont know what it is but I love the way it looks. And sounds super good! and its fast what else do ya need?
Groucho and Buzzard, I think you guys are on track to picking up a little time with what I have. It's worth a try! Buzzard, the gears are 4.88's and the trans is a 2.19 first gear. Tim has some 5.33's I could try too! Here's a video of me smoking them. It sounds like I shift four times and have a four speed! Hahaha! But that first sound change is me letting off and getting back into it... the tires still spun! dragracer50, yea... that would be fun as hell to hang with you guys at the track!
Damn Sam! Great car! I was looking at that post the other day, from when you just got it... Now I just happened to stop by here and see this thread.. 55's are the best! Keep up the good work!
Tell me more about the rear spring setup you have. That is a pivot point on the bottom of the perch/spring correct?
It has ladder bars... and when you run ladder bars with leaf springs, you should run a "floater" or "slider" so the springs do not bind. The reason you need that set-up is that the rear end housing moves about an arc centered at the front ladder bar mount... and the springs moves more-or-lesss up and down. "Up and down" and "in an arc" do not mix! So, what you are seeing is the floater. A few people make them... those are Jegs brand... like the old Alston ones.... which are the ones I prefer. They sell one that is a cage that goes around the housing, but with a rear end like the Olds that does not have a straight 3" tube, it is impossible to use the cage. Anywho, the part that bolts onto the leaf spring serves two purposes. 1) To give a little extra steel for the pin/bolt/bushing to ride on, and 2) to give "some" lateral support for the sring right at the downward brackets. The downward brackets are the two (per side) that have all the holes in them. The holes are to adjust ride height. The spring simply sits on the bolt/bushing and the car us supported, but the rear end is allowed to move in an arc about the ladder bars. Same idea as the 40's Chevies had... The only other part is the diagonal link... you need it (one) to keep the rearend from mmoving sideways in the car. It bolts to the right side of the rear ladder bar bracket on the rear end housing... and the other end mounts to the front latter bar bracket located on the frame... works slick. Dutchman... thanks for the kudos! Sam. Shitty pic:
Hey Sam, Cool stuff. I really dig your 55. I'm thinking with that MPH you should be around 11.20's or so with good traction. With some tuning and waiting for some good winter air, 10's shouldn't be a problem. If it's bogging with the tire pressure down, it sounds like you may want to try the 5.33 gear? I run around 9psi in my slicks. What size are your ET streets? You should put some pics of your car over on the Two Lane Blacktop website: http://groups.msn.com/twolaneblacktophomepage/messageboard
I love your wifes comments... 12.35 Mmmmmmm.... 118 She sounded really disappointed like a school teacher seeing little Jimmy's report and nowing he should have got A's rather than B's. Sounds like all the excuse you need to spend some more time and money getting into the 10's! P.
Sam the car is looking good and running great, your car and jims shakeypuddin55 are my two favorite 55 chevys on the site, keep up the great work. jp
I musta been typing when Groucho posted. I really wasn't just copying what he said. Thunk of it all by myself. As short as they sound, 5.33's will put you between 7163 and 7410rpm at 120 mph. Depending on 29 or 30" rears. I think will a good hole shot, you might be closer to 125. That'd put you at 7462 or 7719. I'm guessing that the 7400 rpm chip is there because that's as high as you want to spin it. Your probably making better power a little lower anyways. I'd be inclined to say change first gear and leave the rears alone. You'll get off the line with more rpm, and still be in the 6000-7000 band where I'm guessing you're making the most power. But heck, If you have the track completely to yourself like that, take a day to run it with the 5.33's and see. It'd certainly be easier to try that first. If it doesn't help your ET's, you can still work on your wheelies!
Your girl quotes 12.35 @ 118MPH in this one? Great MPH. You definately have the horsepower for getting deeper into the 11's. I'd say you should be able to tweak that thing to 11.50-11.60 at least. PS-did I miss your 60 ft time here? What is it with that bog? I'm guessing you should be able to squeeze a 1.6 or so with what you've got
60 foot time for that tire spinning 12.35 run was 1.97... slooooooooow! For the "bog" runs... they are in the high 1.70's... not good, either. I like hearing my 5 year old say "The yellow '55 racing himself!" Sam.
This is how you shift a 4 speed. lol http://s146.photobucket.com/albums/r262/bockbrian/?action=view¤t=mark.flv
yea... when you have a Jerico four speed that is made to upshift without the clutch and with the pedal to the metal! I should have bought one of those... Anyone have any resources for setting up a Muncie to shift in a drag application? The one I have is a BITCH to shift... it feels like it is locked into the gear, kinda like when you are under power and cannot pull it out of gear. Even after I let off the throttle, and push the clutch in, it feels like it is locked in gear. Sam.
That Ford is a Jerico, Boninfante, 474 cubic inch 68 model iron 427...filled block, .046 over, Venolia at 14.2 with Eagle H beams...Comp cut the cam with one of our in house profiles.....best effort to date...9.63@140 and change......3350 with me in it. will be in Tulsa for the Nitro Nats...June 30.....bring it......beer is on me...and it's not 3.2 M.
I'd try a little more air, and get a short, but aggressive forward moving wheel spin. I do believe there's a tenth or so to be gained with what you've got. A compromise of sorts between your bog launch, and the 330' slider. But, like i said. The MPH's there for sure. There's MORE left in that bad boy
You know me, I'm far from a real, deal GEAR HEAD. I'm more about the sensory overload. The looks and sound and all that, and I gotta say, your 55 is so right on the money. Great stance, all the right pieces, not too perfect, just bad-ass in general. Good luck and good job!
