By now, I'm sure most of you know that the 45 year old wheel-driven land speed record held by the legendary Summers Brothers has been broken by Charlie Nearburg and his 523 cubic inch BBC streamliner. When I first heard the news earlier this week, I ...

To read the rest of this blog entry from The Jalopy Journal, click here.
woot. good for the Nearburgs. records are made to be broken, one story giving way to another. this is the way it should be.
I was going to say the same thing, great stuff Ryan. The fact the record stood for so long is testament to the Summers Bros. record also. That must have been a hard one to break.
4 cars over 400 this week. Pretty fast meet. 409 on gas with a 485 inch Cadillac and a cast iron crank is another fun bit of news from the Shoot Out. Little guys (by comparison) are taking over

Very cool shot with the kids........and Congrats to Charlie Nearburg and the record. I clicked thru the "Rett" site a couple of days ago & I had a bit of tear in my eye, but a smile on my face........because that kid lived life. It was sorta' a HAMB Andy moment & now that I have a son, it sorta' hits closer. Chris Nelson Kansas
Old records are cool to look at but all records are made to be broken! That's why we try so hard, "if it were easy everyone would do it".
Very touching stuff about Rett...he must have been giving them a little extra push...congrats to all of them...
Been watching the updates from Slim for four days now - it's like Crack, only better! The trials and tribulations of both the Main/Poteet car and the Ack Attack bike in particular are crazy. BTW, I'm pretty sure it a PONTIAC not a BBC in the Spirit of Rett
Congrats to Charlie Nearburg for breaking a record that stood for a hell of a long time , 45 years ! Records are made to be broken and someone else will figure out how to break this one some day too . As for 4 cars over 400 mph , WOW ! That is a huge accomplishment right there ! Looks like there is a new record in the horizon ! Way to go ! Retro Jim
Congrats to Charlie and the whole Nearburg Racing "Spirit of Rett" team! Being a HEMI fan, I do have to admit that I'm kinda bummed that the Summers Bros. Goldenrod 'liner (powered by 4 normally-aspirated HEMIs) record was broken by a streamliner powered by a single normally-aspirated GM engine ... but at least "Chrysler" powered 'liners still hold the "over 400 MPH" records in the blown classes: * Tom Burkland - #411 AA/BFS (2 supercharged Donovan aluminum HEMIs) - 417.020 MPH - 10/04 * Al Teague - #76 "Spirit of '76" A/BFS (supercharged KB aluminum HEMI) - 409.986 MPH - 8/91 * George Poteet - #1715 "Speed Demon" D/BFS (turbocharged MOPAR Hellfire Lil' HEMI 4 cylinder) - 404.562 MPH - 8/10
Those videos are awesome! The mile markers sure go by fast when your approaching (and exceeding) 400mph. Charlie Nearburg was standing here in my shop earlier this year, and I have to say that my first impression was that he's a true gentleman, and a nice guy. Congrats to Charlie and the whole Sprit of Rett team!
Congrat's to Charlie Nearburg and crew. "These chicks didn't know shit about a revolution" is funny shit and also represents a changing of the guard. The Goldenrod still rules though (and so does pre Brit-pop/invasion R'n'R).
Amir just went 414 exit with that cast Caddy!!!!!! 406 at the mile Oh and the lawnmower just went 82.5!
