merc clutch question. How do I make adjustments? The pedal will go all the way to the floor and return fine but I’m not able switch gears. Any help on how to do this would be greatly appreciated. Also when installing the cross shaft bar and attaching it to that flat ear piece that comes out of the trans. Do either of those need to be turned any certain way before connect both pieces together? Someone had mentioned to me that cross clutch shaft needed to be turned all the way clockwise before connecting the two. Is that true? See photos with red circles.
Do you have these books? Chapter 13 of Vol. 1 tells how to reassemble and adjust clutch equalizer shaft.
The photo your showing is 49-50, not 51. The 51 bellhousing had the shaft in it and the Gear box was the first year of 4 bolts to bell. Yes the shaft should be turned clockwise and Clutch pedal raised to top of it's travel. Then Tab slid into Slot and pin placed. Now remove free play with adjustment on rod.
Next question, Car not running and shifter in N can you push the car by hand? In other words is the Tranny in N when the shifter is in the N position. This is directly related to shift rod adjustment being correct.
Also make sure you don’t have your linkage hooked up backwards. I did that on my Merc by mistake. You shouldn’t have to turn that ear you have circled.
I should go look at a Merc case to be sure. I believe there is a short return spring on the throw out bearing like the pre 48 Ford used. That should fully return the shaft to the clockwise direction. Krazzy as it sounds I have seen the disc installed backwards. That locks it to the Flywheel bolts and won't let it free wheel no matter what.
He has the early 49/50 style trans AKA early 51 trans and bellhousing so those photos that 19Fordy posted are the correct ones. I had a late 51 with the Ford style trans and true it didn't have that setup.
Some early '51 Mercs used carry-over '49-'50 1/2 bells and round pattern trannys, like pictured. The clutch linkage would be the same or similar for regular production '51s with the full cast bell and 4-bolt tranny. The '49-'50/early '51s used a large T/O bearing with a return spring, while the later '51 T/O bearing did not use a return spring.
