They look to be stock, but everything ive read about shoeboxes refers to 15's. Did the 51 come on 16's or has someone put them on there?
Those are stock 16" 1 year only wheels..which came only in 49 models..I think 6 cyl cars..If you decide not to use them..I might be interested in them..
My 49 had 16" stockers on it including the spare. I think it was being phased out to 15" You probably could order the car with 16" tires I would say.
I have been told they came on the 6 cylinder cars. Depending on who you ask, they aren't real common. Wheelkid has some on his site.
I also parted out plenty of 49', 50', 51' fords and have never came across 16" wheels. 6cly & 8cyl cars!
Who knows, but they're kind of cool. My buddy down the street took a set off his shoebox.I'd like to have them.
"Deluxe" (bottom line at the time) shoebox Fords came standard with 16" wheels. I had a friend in high school who had a '51 Deluxe two door sedan with 16" wheels. He would have sold his soul for a set of 15's. He finally got them. Tires were easier to find (and cheaper) and the selection of wheel-covers (Olds Starfires and Dodge Lancers were big back then) was a lot better. Notice that the car in the picture is a "Deluxe". I don't think it had anything to do with 6 vs V8 other than that more Deluxe 6 cylinders were sold than Customs.
Yep, el cheapo option wheels when the fancy new 15" wheels were being introduced in '49. They are hard to find too. Nice for using 16" wheels on a later passenger car 9" too!
Yeah its 51 Deluxe 6cyl. I think ill run them (i just bought this car) now i want to see what 16's with wide whites look like on a shoebox...
The car looks real solid, and from just looking at the pictures, I'd run them (if the tires are still good). I can't really tell the difference just looking at the pictures. They're probably worth a bit to our restorer buddys if you want to get rid of them later. I am kind of surprised that they came with beauty rings. The beauty rings may be after maket, but they look good to me.
I have a pair in the classifides, they came from a 49 6-cylinder business coupe. So....they were only available on the 49 model?
In 1958 I bought a bone stock 1950 Deluxe V8 2 Door sedan and it had factory 16" wheels, much to my surprise. Later research confirmed they were standard equipment on lower line models. Ray
Thanks for the info, looks like they were never strictly for an engine size or particular body or year. I guess they were the stock wheel on some of the lower ranges but at the time customers might have ticked the 15" box when purchasing new. Tubman, the cars solid as a rock, thanks. Id still like to see a car "done up" on 16's.
I have a 50 ford coupe hull (SHIFTY 50) it has a set of 16" steel wheels on it. an old timer near me has restored more 49-51s than anyone ive met i may have to go see him and find out what he knows.
My '50 deluxe was purchased new by my Grandmother. The 16s were standard. The only options on this 6 cylinder car were a oil bath air cleaner and plastic seat covers. Grandmother was very conservtive.
Had a 51 "cromeless wonder" sme color as yours when in highschool in 1959. V8, 3 speed with over drive. Had the 16s but don't remember it having beauty rings. I caught loads of s@#* from all my buddies over those wheels but it sure beat riding a bicycle! Ted
Yes 16" wheels were optional in all those years I believe. I have a friend with a beautiful one repaint 50 coupe with 16ers from the factory. 15s were the norm but you could specify 16"ers if you wanted.
The folks have already told the facts on these, they are so super desirable, as are those way bad ass dog dish caps. Good score bro. ~sololobo~
this is the first time i hear this..from what i have read and been told they came off 49 cars only..but it never hurts to learn something new..
Well this 51 is bog stock on 16"ers. I think they're pretty cool, may be a bit harder to get her low, but will look awesome with those big rims and tyres tucked up in there, which is why i want to see some pics of shoeboxes on 16'".
My 49 coupe is untouched , bone stocker. 239 flattie and came with the 16" rims. At one time the original owner did put early 50's ford hub caps on it.
Quick question for you, I have a 50' Ford and it has three four bolt wheels and one five bolt, what was stock on these cars?
