Hi. What you may need to determine is the brand of the oil filter housing. Most of these were DEALER installed items & some were Fram & some were Delco & Purolator. then there was the hot rodders Bee Hive filter. I just looked in my www.chevsofthe40s.com car catalog & it lists several different sizes. They have the following listed - #5572288A 3.5" OD X 4 1/16" high, inside hole 1 1/8" ID. Is a P203 filter element. #5572288B 4 1/16" OD x 4 11/16" high, inside hole 1.836 ID. Is a Wix filter element #5572288D 4 1/16" OD x 7.75 high, inside hole 1.836" ID. Is a P117 filter element. #5572288C 4.25" OD x 5" high, inside hole 9/16" ID. P115 filter element & these fit the Bee Hive filters. www.chevsofthe40s.com Or 360 816 0211 is the phone. You may be able to use the #'s and find what you need at an auto parts for less money that Chevs price with shipping. As there was some slack it the fit of the elements the 3.5" x 4 1/16' may work for you. Good luck, Jim
Hi again. Yes they are different BUT the element does not have to fit tight against the walls of the housing. All these drop in filters are is something like a drip coffee pot - the oil flows in and takes it's sweet time going thru the filter and exits back to the pan. Slight differences in height should work as they usually have a spring on top to fit it down against the bottom and a bit of slack around the outside makes no difference. This is NOT a full pressure filter system. If the oil can make it in and out of the housing with the oil going thru the element all is fine. Some slack in the fit is ok. I do not think the full pressure filters came about until the screw in filters hit the market. Another option is there is an aftermarket adapter to mount a base for a screw in cartridge. That would no look original BUT the elements are much less expensive and found everywhere. Jimmie

yes, wix 51010 is whats in it now, and what i was going to replace with till i was told it was wrong, thanx, but am just not sure why it has 2 washers at bottom of stem, is that normal?
So how thick are the washers? If only 1/16" or so just take one out, with the spring it will make no difference. Sounds like you are over thinking this.
ok, your probably right,it just puzzled me having the washers,1 is slightly wider than other, asif they been put there for some reason,
got washers sorted, they are there coz without, the filter sits on inlet pipe that comes in from bottom
Do you know any old time mechanics? That type of filter was common on all kinds of cars. Same filter was probably used on some English trucks and machinery back in the fifties and sixties. If you can identify the filter housing you can figure out what filter it takes. Without pictures or information we are just guessing.
