1949 3600 I am ditching the stock front axle for a 1/2 ton version over the winter, and I would really like to increase the stopping power and safety of this truck by changing over to disc brakes. Not sure if I will stay 6 bolt, or convert to 5. I have a complete 1/2 ton front axle hub to hub and wheels for it, so staying with 6 would be ideal. What is the best bang for the buck? Buy a complete kit? Buy brackets and buy all stuff from FLAPS? Junk Yard??
Just finished a power disc conversion with 6 lug on a 50 half ton using a CPP kit. I got the upgrade kit with aluminum hubs and modern taper bearings, booster, bolt on mounting bracket, master cyl, metering block, rotors, calipars, hoses, and all hardware. This kit works with or without clutch pedal. Was a very easy conversion. The kit was just a little over $800 including shipping from Calif. to Ark.
You will have more wheel options (both old style and aftermarket) with a 5 lug conversion vs a 6 lug unless you want to run the newer 18"-20" big wheels which are popular now.
late '70s 4x4 chevy 6 lug rotors can be put on you original hubs, and with a little adapting the brackets can be bolted to the spindle.
Not too concerned about wheel options, at least not now. Planning on running stock caps with wide whites.
Anybody have any experience with this kit? http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Deluxe-Disc-Brake-Kit-1941-1959-Chevy-Half-Ton-Pickup,4622.html
