My Boss 429 had the oil cooler and oil cooler adapter removed for headers. Since then I've replaced all the missing parts and wanted to keep the headers ( these engines really need them) cut-off , rebuilt the #5 and #6 tubes to snake around the cooler. They say it couldn't be done! Ha! I did it.
The old 427-428s made plenty of steam, this one is a bit of a Frankenstein... Cobra Jet lower end with a 427 top end, dont have to spin it so tight. A torque monster that eats, most all street cars. I tell the street racers its a Hotted up 390
The hydraulic cam 427 was listed as an option in the early printed versions of the 1068 Fairlane /Torino sales brochures, but it never made it to production. There was a long UAW strike early in the model year. The 427 was pretty much a hand built engine, and required many machining and assembly operations that are different than the plebeian FE engines. It was dropped after the strike (actually, only enough were made for a few high option Cougars, probably built before the strike) Shortly after the strike, the 428 Cobra Jet was introduced in the Mustang, Shelby, and a few Torinos and Mercury Cyclones. I have also read all the stories of how Tasca “invented” the Cobra Jet, but have some serious doubts that he deserves all the accolades bestowed on him. The timing just doesn’t seem right, given that Tasca’s mule was a 67, with magazine articles in, I believe, very late 1967, and the Cobra Jet was in production in April 1968. That’s not consistent with engineering production lead times, as anyone involved in engineering can attend. Rather, I suspect internal parts lists were released to Tasca through Ford Engine Engineering, and Tasca was used to generate advanced publicity. The Hot Rod Magazine pole was likely a publicity stunt. There were a lot of hot Rodgers working in engineering at the time. Jack Roush, Karl Holbrook, Dave Lyall are a few.
My high school ride , was a ‘67 Fairlane , it started out as 390 4speed . I found a ‘69 Torino Cobra , that looked like it had been sitting parked and hit in the rear by a run away freight train . 428 SCJ Drag Pac car . I paid $500.00 for the Cobra. Transplanted the 428 SCJ , oil cooler , close ratio top loader and 4.30 Detroit Locker N case 31 spline into the Fairlane body . I purchased a 427 glass hood as used on the 427 factory cars . This was a torque monster that no 17 year old kid should have been driving daily . I really don’t know how my parents slept at night . It’s no problem to light the wick at any given moment . At 19 it was a fond memory , and I was a laborer on the Transmission Pipeline Crew , no need for the Cobra Jet , gas went from .33 to .73 , I was making $3.75 a dollar . Dirty , and hard worked as a rented Mule daily . Long live the forgotten FE , they are a great bang for your buck . If I had to do over , I think the ‘32 would by powered by one .
Mine was a 69 SCJ and had no problem what so ever installing hooker headers with no modification to the oil cooler system.
For most years in the 60s Nascar required one 4 barrel. In 1965 Nascar said no hemis not production and Chrysler said OK we won"t play. In 1966 the Hemi was in production and ford countered with the cammer and nascar said not production and Ford countered we want 2 carbs or we won't play. If you look a pictures of 63 Nascar Fords they say 410 HP.
Ford would have had the cammer in production Galaxies had nascar gave the engine the green light, which they didn't. After much arm twisting nascar relented and would let the sohc be legal providing it use 1-4 barrel plus an extra 400 lbs. weight penalty which would pretty much make the combination uncompetitive. I always thought it would have been a great engine option for the 66-67 Fairlane had the engine become legal.
As far as I know the only FE with pushrods threw the intake runners was the tunnel port. Supposedly to make a straighter shot to the valve.
I was referring to the 8 holes in the manifold as shown in the picture on the previous page. I've only had one FE in a '64 T-bird and never took a valve cover off.
Yep, part of the deal- the Hammys sound pretty good, but nothing booms like a 427 with a lotta squeeze and a lotta stick
Oh, yea! $1500 is a good price now! I have seen them asking up to $2600 for the ‘65 and up manifolds! Bones
At this time I think they are only reproducing the 406 shorties. There were some early long tubes reproduced, but they all sold and the later long tubes were never reproduced…..as far as I know! Bones
Thanks Gene! Yes my long tubes are the later, that is what took me so long to find them….3/4 years! I bought my intake problaly 5/6 years ago , even before I bought my 1965 Galaxie, and have been collecting the right carbs and linkage since then! In my quest I have accumulated eight 3X2s carbs and one set of linkages. It has been fun looking for them and out of all those carbs I should bee able to build a set. One of the funny things is after I had acquired five carbs and had everything I needed, I bought a whole shelf of parts at an auction , as I was going through it I spied a box and opened it up…..it had a almost complete set of 3X2s carbs in it! ( see pic). I have an air cleaner base and a top, not original, given to me by a friend. This set up will get built….after I build the 462 engine! At the rate I’m going …..it might be a spell! Thanks for the offer….tho! Bones
If you're spending enough to build a 462, I strongly suggest the MR 2x4 intake instead of the 3x2- the 3x2 isn't close to enough to properly feed a 462. And you can run plane-jane #1850 Holleys on the MR2x4 with only a little work- throttle response on my Gal is impressive
Thanks , Gene, I know I’m leaving some horsepower on the table with the 3X2s. I just like them. My Galaxie isn’t going to be a race car, just a street driven car. It will have a C-6 transmission with about 2600 stall and will shift at approximately 5000 rpm, with probably 3.50 gears. I may be rethinking the 462, due to cost and seems like the kit is getting hard to get. I have a good 428 engine and have a good set of forged .030 over pistons. So… I may just go 428 + .030. I’m just wanting a good sounding , impressive looking ( long tubes and 3X2s), tire burner! Probably not the best combo of parts, but I think it will be fun…..if I ever get it done! Bones
Medium Riser dual-plane 2x4- very good intake. The Tunnel Wedge will make more top end, but the dual plane is tough on a street car
