Projects 426 hemi engine

I have a chance to buy a 426 hemi engine with one cracked head that is known. I would only do this as an investment. Is the market still there for these engines. I can probably buy it for $500. Any opinions

 

Before the Recession I heard a good rebuildable core were going for 5-7,000.

500? is a give-a-way price the one good head is worth at least twice that the crank and rods will bring 3 times that or more

there is only one engine that is cast iron and looks like a 426 unlike the 392 and prior hemis which all look alike externally

stock 426 hemi heads will not bolt to any other blocks

 

Cracked heads can be fixed and warrantied even. I wouldnt be talking I would be buying BUT ARE you sure it is a 426 HEMI? A pic would be a real good idea. The number of times I have been called out to look at a 426 hemi that wasnt . Usually not even a hemi. I did get lucky once though.

I have looked at more alleged 426 Hemi's and/or Hemi cars than I can count over the last 25 years. Every one was an engine, or a car, and that is where the accuracy of the description fell apart.

 

I almost had a 426 once guy swore he called Big Daddy Don Garlits and confirmed it. It even had the rare distributer in the back and a 2bbl card. Turned out to be a 331. Deal didnt work out and the price sti wasnt 5 bills.

 

Thanks for the constructive comments, except for the cyber bully A-- holes , I just missed the engine. Someone got wind of it and bought it. It was a 1966 426

 

went to look at a 392 hemi once, turned out to be a desoto. told the guy that and bought it for 25% of what was asking.

Yup, you missed it, and I bought it. I got the guy down to $400 because it had a cracked head, plus he said he could never get it to idle smooth. He thinks it idled bad because that big wide belt on the front of the motor was missing.
