I'm having a problem with the stock starter on my 40 mercury. The starter engages and then doesn't always disengage after the engine starts. Sometimes I have to disconnect the battery to get it to release. I'm wondering if it needs the gear and spring serviced and or replaced or if it has something to do with my conversion to 12 volt. I was under the impression that the 12 volt conversion wouldn't effect the starter other than making it turn faster and start easier. Anyone have similar problem and a solution? Thanks for any help!
We had some flathead farm trucks. One had a certain year pressed steel plate that the starter bolts to, and it was bent, which made the starter misaligned. That one I recall, would get the starter gear locked to the flywheel and not turn? And I remember one had a broken Bendix spring, which is attached to the sliding starter gear. at any rate, back up top for more answers
The starter plate is the original so I think that's ok but the solenoid might be sticking, It's pretty new but not sure if it's a 12volt or if it matters but I'll look into that, i need to pull the starter anyway and check the condition of the bendix spring and gear, thanks for the ideas guys!
