40 and 48 Ford Steering columns

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by vintageauto, May 24, 2013.

  1. Hi All,

    Is there any big difference between a 40 and a 46-48 Ford Column? Could I use a 48 in a 40 w/o much trouble?

    Thanks

The columns are not interchangeable but are all 1/1/2 inch diameter tubing. The bell is different on the 46-48 versus the 40 so the 40 wheel looks out of place on the 46-48. The locking mechanism is omitted on the late 47's and 48's. The ignition switch is in the mounting bracket which is stamped steel. Having said that, you can make them work and they are much less expensive than the 40. Hope this helps.

Pewsplace, Is the shift column you have shown in your last photo a 47-48 column that you made fit a 1940 ford? Also, will the 40 "bell" fit the 48 column? Thanks.
