I wonder what this means for some of our products. I love using 3M products and alot of them. I've heard recently that Meguiars has some nice polishes and compounds that I havent tried yet. They donated some stuff to the Kopper Kart build and Mark gave them a shot and loved them. Maybe theyll combine to make a super product!

  8. Yep we did it. The reasoning is the enthusiast market. We are already used by most professionals and wanted to break into another market.

Hmm, what happens when you cross the ultra technology of Post-Its and car wax?

  12. I've always been a fan of 3M compounds but haven't used any of the "new" formulated compounds yet.I will never understand some of these companies. They get a compound that is the best to use, then they "reformulate" and they suck?Whats the thought process there?I'm just an average dumbass bodyman/painter and need enlightened on somethings and this is one of them.We can pretty much tell why Barry would have sold.

At least they we bought out by a U.S. based corporation. 3M is obviously HUGE here in MN and you are probably pretty new to the area if you don't know at least one person who works there. They have their own 3M car club and they usually host a large MSRA meeting at least once a year. And I am sure Barry has the largest grin on his face to match the large check in his bank account. I met him at Back to the 50's this year and he was as nice as he seems on TV. Haven't seen any new episodes of Car Crazy recently, maybe this is why? Would be a shame if they stopped making it in my opinion!

  16. The compounds change with the Paint companies products. National VOC regulations also mandate changes to products.

3m just closed the Imation plant near my Town and layed off nearly 400 People so they could move the plant to mexico.

not quite related, but it sucks.

  18. Man, I'm glad I'm not the only one that feels that way......

The new 3M formulations suck....UNLESS you sand the finish with 4-6 progressively finer grits of paper until you end with Trizact.
Guess sandpaper sales musta needed a boost...

I hope it doesn't end up being bad news. I've been a fan f Meguires products since I bought my first can of Meguires Competition wax in 1969. That stuff could make a fender so slick that the so called car show "models" who like to plant their buns on your fender would slide right off.

  21. Are they keeping Barry for the TV programs or will he go away? I've been using Adams stuff for a couple of years, seems to work better than Meguires on flat red and black paint.

The downside is another family run biz now becomes part of a huge comglomerate.

The upside is now there's room for some upstart outfit to make a dent in the marketplace...

  29. They will do like they do with all the companies they buy leave it alone for awhile and then start changing it to suit their mandate. They left Duramix alone for a number of years but cut it way back this year. I would say Meguirs's was more of a purchase to expand their retail sales base which they have little or none of in 3M branded polishes. That is where the volume sales are in polish and detail products.

Management: "we need to reduce manufacturing/raw goods cost of this product. Remove a step, or some of the $$ materials."

Engineering: "Allright, we'll eliminate one of the last steps, and put 10% less (insert chemical here) and call it "reformulated, or "improved" "

Management: O.K. boys, and thanks....we're off to play golf now"

    sad but true:(
