i would like to put a 39 chevy car 3 speed in my 46 coupe to have the floor shifter rather than the 3 on the tree. does anybody know if the trans is a direct fit or what the differences may be
To my knowledge, the 42-48 Chevy trans was only ever installed in the 42-48 Chevy. I'd think it would be much easier to adapt a shifter to the existing trans, instead of trying to mount a trans that would require additional fabrication just to fit the trans.
If you can find it, it's a bolt-in. I think that a similar top shift transmission was used in Chey light trucks thru '46(?). That may expand your opportunities or broaden your search.
'41-'47 Chev or GMC commercial 3 speed is what you want. The bellhousing has to be changed to comm., pedal linkage & mounts will need some work. It's worth it.
A 51 thru 54 Chevy side cover will bolt on to a vacuum shift trans so you can use an aftermarket floor shift. The later side cover will cause a leak since the earlier trans body casting is not the exact shape as the later trans. A build up with brazing rod on the earlier trans can be done to match the 51-54 side cover and do away with the possibility of a leak. I did this exact thing on a 48 back in 1959 when I was still in high school.
now that sounds like a idea anybody know where a sidecover or a 41-47 commercial 3 speed might be found?
