Hot Rods '39 Ford open drive transmission question

The '39 Trans in my '46 Ford has the truck open drive flange on it.

Can the flange be flipped upside down to put the speedometer connection in a position where the cable may not bind into the floorboard? I am guessing it could, but may leak.

 

I turned mine over in my 33 Ford roadster, and haven't had any problems.
