A customer called wanting a original 39 Ford car grill repaired, he said it was made from..pig iron.. Is this another name for pot metal? Thanks in advance
Like was said it’s not a 39 deluxe grille. Henry’s was stamped steel with stainless steel vertical trim on it
Pig iron is crude iron as first obtained from a smelting furnace, in the form of oblong blocks. I think he just misspoke.
Most people don't know what they are talking about, just regurtitsatiang what they heard from somewhere else.
Pig iron is slang for cast iron. Way way back, molten iron was channeled into troughs for cooling. A large cooling trough would have several smaller troughs coming off for the molten iron to flow into. The larger pieces of iron from the larger troughs were called Sows. The smaller pieces of iron from the smaller attached troughs were called Pigs. Thus pig iron. The smaller pig iron could be easily shipped and was used by foundries for all kinds of things..... pots, skillets, toys, railing, ect, ect, ect.... The only thing I think of that used a cast iron grille..... Maybe some tractors.
Way back when, early sixties maybe. you could get a " replacement grille" that was diecast . Back then my older brother saved up and ordered one from "Honest Charlie". I helped him install it one Saturday afternoon. When we were done we had to road test it. . We were about three miles out of town when, guess what a pheasant flew out of the ditch and destroyed the diecast grille
'40 & '41 Pickup is the same as '40 Standard car grill, and yes, cast. '39 Deluxe looks similar to '40 Std but as said before is stamped steel with stainless bars. Dave
