Technical 39-48 Flathead - Modifying Oil Pan for a Baffle with 49-53 pump

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Bored&Stroked, Nov 6, 2016.

  1. I've pulled the 42 Merc engine out of the 32 Cab such that I can put the newly built 39 Transmission in it, decided to put a new oil pan on it (clearanced for the 32 wishbone - for an upcoming lowered front spring). Anyway, the particular oil pan that I have is I believe from around 39 or so - it is the best one to use when running a stock 32 wishbone. (I made a previous post on the modifications I did for increased wishbone clearance).

This pan also has an oil baffle plate in it - which most of the later oil pans do not have. The only problem is that when running the 49-53 oil pump and pickup, it will hit the baffle. I decided to do a little cutting and splicing to rework the baffle (and not just cut it out). It would seem that it would help keep oil on the pickup during hard acceleration (which I'm the type of guy to do). :)

    So - here yah go:

Stock baffle - sits right exactly where the pickup needs to go:

Looks like a good modification. I may take a look at that when I have my pan off later this winter.
