Have a 38 21 stud with 4 speed truck gearbox.

Will a car gearbox bolt straight on ?

If so, is the clutch and all else the same or do I need more parts besides the box ?

I am reading the best is a 39, but are any other years suitable ?

I will need an open drive output, so if it too hard to make the 39 open drive, are there any modern gearboxes that will fit with minimal modification , I am in Australia, so locally made or available boxes will only do .

I think I have heard of a volvo 4 speed box to mate up ?

Will be running a 3.08 rear end with 16 inch wheels with big tyres.

Only interested in cruising , not acceleration .

The trans out of a 48-52 F1 pickup is what you want. It is a 3 speed, will bolt up to your engine, and it is open drive.

You can start at '42 PU tranny's.

I think there are just 3 things needed to convert to open drive..main shaft, rear retainer and something else (slips my mind)...normal cost for the parts is about 100 bucks US in my part on the country.
