Not the usual Hamb sort of car but after the Hispano thread the other day I thought some of you may get a kick out of it This car is finally almost at the end of a prolonged restoration being finally finished by Alpine Eagle in Clanfield England after previous attempts by other "experts", I have done the trim to as close a guestimation of the original as possible as at some point someone tried to make this thing a four seater?! its a 37 4 1/4 Derby Bentley with a one off body by Park ward on an MR chassis (the most sought after Derby) here are some pics anyway Sorry for the quantity and lack of quality
WOW that is a NICE lookin car!! its a work of art!! i like it. the only problem i see is the steering wheel is on the wrong side but i could get used to that!
Hey, WOW! thanks for this post FHC builds by any coachbuilder on Rolls or Bentley chassis were exceedingly rare! Park Ward were one of the early coachbuilders to incorporate metal framing in the building of their bodies. Most others were still using wooden (seasoned ash) framing in their body builds. Was there any large amount of wood used in the vehicles' body framing? Conelley leather? Moutons? Your work looks great! " Humpty Dumpty was pushed "
WOW...put that body on a brand new Corvette frame with 22" shiny wire wheels....be a major ride.... ROFLMAO..... beautiful car - who cannot appreciate the style and craftsmanship? dj
Your right to a certain extent park ward where the first to use a standardized steel construction but only for their standard range of saloons , this is a full ash frame paneled in aluminum , fhc where not so popular in England thus the rarity and most British coachbuilders where fairly conservative unless prompted by customers . At the time this was meant to be the next big thing for the UK and was obviously taking its styling from the usa but was a flop with only one built for the earls court motorshow and no orders. The leather is Connelly or what remains of the company , west of England cloth head lining and wilton carpet
There were some really nice bodies mounted on those 4.5 & 3.5 Bentleys. It's a shame none of them were built with the steering wheel in the "right" spot
Beautiful workmanship, real quality. I wonder how long it would take to get used to the shifter and E brake being constantly in the way when entering or exiting. Perhaps the butler lifted one iinto it...?
Pure sex right there!!!!!!!!! I think I see some ideas there that could be used in the 36 build. Thanks for the photos.
It's a throw back to the chauffeur driven cars , rolls (who owned bentley) at the time used to put the shifter and handbrake on the o/s sti the rear seat passengers wouldn't see the chauffeurs arm and leg moving as it was deemed inappropriate , those where the days ! Plus you where meant to exit the car curb side they carried it on post war until they went auto , door locks only on the outside of passenger door It doesn't take much getting used to for driving but you spend a lot of time with gear lever up your trousers leg getting in !!
A flop? Thats a shame the bean counters got to shelve that design. Sales vs Style If I sold everything I own, I would still be six figures short (maybe seven).... I really don't make enough money for my desires
I like everything about it, except the interior isn't working for me. Something about it, it's just too plush or something. It doesn't look right to me. Anyway, I'm nitpicking, gorgeous car.
Nice car. i like it . Morgen still makes cars that look like that the back fenders a just a bit diffrent tho.
What no one has photoshopped a chop top, maybe lower it a little in the rear...hmm some bigger whitewalls, some caddy caps, flat head V8, some tuck and roll now were talkin'. Nice ride. It's a beaut.
Gorgeous! I'm not typically a fan of the interiors found in Bentley/RR cars of olde, but that one makes me reconsider. I love the 'bucket' seats and beautifully detailed luggage area. Bentley's fractional displacement ratings always made me laugh. I'd love to see more of the engine, there seems to be quite a lot going on under the hood.
Let see if I get this right: The Bently was made to be driven and the Rolls was made to be driven in.
