Locally theres a guy I can score a good running/shifting 350-700R4 out of a 85 Suburban for $500. Any reason to not score this for my 54 chevy since its from a suburban, i.e. gearing, mounts etc? Any help is greatly appreciated.... Thanks Jaison
Yes, the 85 700R4s aren't exactly the best ones ever made. You really want an '87-up unit that's when they finally got all the bugs worked out. I just picked up a really nice one from a 92 Roadmaster for $150 with a 30 day warranty from a local boneyard. the 350 engine itself isn't exactly the most desirable either, especially if it has stock heads. Then again, if it all runs good and its easy to grab its not a BAD deal. Oh and the 700R4's pretty much all have the same gearing in them with the exception of some of the late 90's models which are actually 4L60e's by then, so it doesn't even come into question most of the time.
That's not near as stupid a suggestion as it may sound to some people. In this area and probably Colorado too at least 60% of the 80 an up Burbs are 4x4. 500 sounds fair for that combo if it is all there but a lot of times cash greenies in the hand are a real good negotiating tool.
If it is a 4x4 unit then you will need to grab a tailshaft housing and an output shaft from a 2wd. Tranny shops usually sell the pair for $50 or so. I have changed a ton of them over both ways. You can do it with just a set of snap ring pliers. Don't even have to disassemble the clutch packs.
