I picked up this 34 ford coupe and I'm on the fence about what to do with it..The previous owner took what was an original barn find and upgraded the car with a fresh 283 SBC/T-5 trans and disc brakes and radials all around..Most else was pretty much left as found including the brush painted grey paint on the main body..The fenders/hood were stripped and obviously primed more recently.( I'm thinking about painting them to match the body). Here's my dilema:I am not a big fan of the SBC/T5/disc brakes/radials..I prefer a flathead powered ride. Do I leave this cool car alone or change it with a complete frame/driveline swap. I'm putting it out there for my fellow HAMbers. What ya think? Cool as-is or?? 343window 004.JPG 343window 005.JPG 343window 006.JPG 343window 007.JPG 343window 011.JPG 343window 010.JPG

I would get a matching pair of vice grips for the drivers door and call it good.

Looks pretty gennie to me. Maybe a new shifter knob and who would know that it's a 5sp. In the meantime get yourself a flattie and transmission and set a date to swap them in.

  4. I'd leave the SBC 5 spd, disc brakes as is.
Since it's not original top coat paint with patina, but primer, some body work is in order, decent single stage solid color paint, swap out gear shift knob, put together a complete interior, and enjoy a fun road worthy Hot Rod.
Work on the stance..needs more of a rake.
A nice car, whatever direction you go.

I think I'd drive it's balls off while saving my money to put it on steelies and bodywork and paint it. I love flatheads but I won't kick a small block outta bed

    That paint is not patina.
It needs a real paint job.
    Driveline? Why ask?
Your car your choice. Both are cool.
    Wish I had such problems.

    34 Ford 3 window Coupe..What to do?

Congrats - I'd use it as a pattern to put my 50 year accumulation of 1933 3Win pieces & parts together. :)

    Hey FG,
If you really want a flathead powered 3 window, I would sell this SBC version and get a different car from the for sale section. Unless this 3 window is pristine and flawless it may not be worth it to change it over. There seems to be a lot of work involved with the faults on this coupe. But, if you have the time, labor, money and facilities, then go ahead and keep this car as it is a sleeper. There are plenty of people that love the SBC set up and will drive it the way it looks. (then start doing little things as you go along) It looks like a lot of fun in an old car.
If you think you just have to get a flathead and change over, of course, that is your choice. You will be reading a lot of opinions as everyone has one... again, time, labor, money and facilities are what should tell you to keep it or drive it. If you look at all of the ads for 34 3 window coupes, they are all finished and expensive.

This coupe looks traditional, much like what teenagers used to do back in the late 50's and early 60's. Buy a car, put a SBC and trans, go racing or cruising. Money was always a factor for everyone. Drive it...

If that car works good the way it is I would leave the Chevy in it. It cost a lot of money to get the Flatty up to the performance level of a 283. Get the body into one color ( without tearing it apart completely) and some economy interior in it and have fun. Once you tear it apart to change the engine it becomes a project and may never get finished!

  20. Drive it for at least a year and enjoy it. By then you'll have an idea of how to make it yours.

  21. Out of what you paid for it ---
Some of that dough was for the PO's efforts towards upgrades.
Why buy it if you're gonna throw that part of your dough away.

Drive it or tighten it up and flip it to someone who wants what it is

Why did you buy it, if you didn't like the drive train?

  25. I'll swap you +/- a nice '33 5W coupe body and chassis with a 59AB, 39 trans, early Ford brakes to help you out.

Fix it. Drive it. Enjoy it, until you find a trade for what you want.

If the question is gnawing on you now it will be gnawing on you forever. If you like doing your own work there really isn't any pride in driving someone else's build. Drive as is till you pile up enough parts to start your build your way. You could conceivably be driving while you are building a hole new chassis/drive train next to it and unload unwanted parts later. I'll take a wild guess here and say you probably only paid what the '34 3/W body was worth anyway and the rest was just fluff..............................................
