I have the chance to get a couple of frames a guy saved from the crusher. 1 is a T frame, one is an A, and the last is some where between 33-40. I think the 33-34 are the same and 35-40 are the same, but, what is the difference. How can I tell what it is?
A couple of easy ways to spot the '35 - '48 Ford frames is that there will be a "box" riveted to the outside of the frame rail, near the rear "kick up" area. The '33/4 Frames do NOT have this mount. Also, the steering boxes are mounted differently. The '34 and earlier steering boxes bolted directly to the frame rail, with the sector shaft protruding through the rail. The '35 & newer cars have a bracket riveted to the rail and the steering box was bolted to this bracket (these '35 and newer cars used "cross" steering, while the earlier cars used a draglink that ran along side the frame rail). To determine the specific year, check the measurements and the VIN number.
Also, the quickest check is the 35-40 frames have a channel crossmember at the very rear of the frame, from rail to rail, the 33-34 does not.
Not all 35-40 frames have the "box" riveted to the frame. The pick ups used the same frame, but did not have the "box" on the frame. Cheers, Stewart.
Here's another way to tell from 30 feet away: a '35 and up frame will have the big holes for the rubber motor mounts on top of the front crossmember, and '33-'34 frames have them down low behind the crossmember.
Okie, Check the serial numbers stamped on the frame. Here's where to look on the left frame rail.. http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/flathead_serialnumbers.htm
