I notched a piece of angle then bent it into shape.

Next I concentrated on smoothing out the dash. 20120926_164617a.jpg

I love that this started with something like "I really don't have any metal working skills..."

& other than the VolksT s that were originally called Volks-Rods, this is what a volksrod should be.
Maybe those cats that cobble bugs/vans/etc should see this.
English Gent - you rock. You've got a good thread going here, & I like your approach, but, I'm not buying the bit of "don't really have any metal working skills". Not for one second... :D .

As you can see by now, this is an alternative approach to building a hotrod, so my next move was also slightly different from the norm.
In order to produce the distinctive bead along the beltline but without the use of a be 20141007_143700a.jpg 20141007_143857a.jpg 20141007_143913a.jpg ad roller, I made the required profile in resin. I then made a rubber mould. These moulds are used in centrifugal casting (mainly for jewellery). With the mould I could then produce the profile in white metal (also known as pewter, a mixture of tin and lead, although it can be lead free). I was then able to solder the cast bead onto the body in the required position.
Now that the mould is made, I can produce more pieces for the rest of the body.

Just wondering how thick the bead is. Pewter can be pretty soft and that's the outermost point that might get dinged or bent....

  22. Wow! This is sure an interesting approach. No skills? Sure!

  23. Am I the only one who can't see the pics on the last couple pages?

  24. No your not,
I need to quote the post then expand the quote and then view the attachments in separate windows. So just go to my post with the quote view the attachments.

  25. Ulu says I need a factory emblem for my car to celebrate an awkward intersection. I know that English gent has seen it - thank you by the way- but if you've seen my car you'd know that I will need to make it. This sounds like an awesome way to do that:)

  26. This thread is getting more interesting with each subsequent update..if you continue with this unorthodox thinking you just might run the risk of turning a pile of dis-guarded vw parts into a real hot rod! HRP

Based on the look of the mold... I'd say the bead is solid.

    I love this thread!!!!

  28. Man this looks cool. Nice work.
Is it done yet? I want to see it finnished.

I wonder why this is happening? Perhaps I should upload the images as thumbnails as well as full size?
