   They weren't designed for GM, but GM was an early customer of Phillips' screw company. Phillips wasn't even the inventor of the cross-recessed drive type that he sold; he purchased the rights from the original inventor.

   Glad they didn't use the original inventors name, it's a lot easier to say than something like Poindexter or Wojohowicz head screwdriver.
