A couple of weeks ago an out of town buddie of mine asks me to go check out a car for him. So i do as he asks but while i'm at this dudes farm i spot an "Old farm trailer" and ask to buy it. No worries make an offer; whats it worth to ya?; $50; Done i'll be back next week to pick it up.
Hey Ryan i was going to cut all the shit off of it but if you think it will look right at the show i might be able to put the grinder away for a couple of months!
I asked him if he knew of the body. He told me no but up until a few years ago he had a wind screen and a the wire wheels but he turfed them.
I bought a '32 Ford haywagon from a farm junkyard in Carlisle, PA about 1969 for $25.00*, which included trucking the thing into town to my bunker! I really lucked out, too. Lots of surface rust, but aside from welding some tongue hardware to the front axle it was entirely unaltered and niothing that did not get in the way of the hay had been removed...still had hubcaps, engine steady rods, etc. Making wagons out of old Fords is an integral part of farmer culture...there have to be lots of such things still out there. *Economic history footnote...I was a student then. $25.00 was a lot of money then. It was an unusual bit of luck that I could actually put my hands on that much, and that was enough to put a few sacks of groceries on the Farmer's table!
That's awesome - I've seen a few with A rails cut up but never a deuce - and with the K member and rear cross as well! Too cool! Steve
I had a similar find in the late 70s in western MN. I bought a complete 32 frame for $10 from the scrapper. I saw it as I was driving home from work and noticed the unmistakable indent on the frame rails. All the horns had been cut off but it has the K-member. I had to cut (torch) the rear wheels off as the guy wanted them back. They had been welded to the brake drums. I still have the frame.
This is the reason EVERY farm trailer you see should have a glance underneath. Somewhere there is probably one with a Dago front axle and a quickchange.
Thanks for all the comments guy's. This has realy thrown a spanner in the works. You see i'm about at the stage of driving my 46 a long way from being finnished but all the hard stuff is done and the day after i did the deal for the chassis a friend tells me of a real nice improved a coupe body for the right price but i still can't afford it and keep the 46. Plus the next car to be worked on was meant to be my 28 roadster. I guess i'll figure out what to do eventualy!
