The previous owner had replaced the roof wood back in the 70's. It was installed incorrectly at the header, missing fasteners or the wrong type of fasteners, along with several brackets. I removed all of it, sanded and sealed the wood. Cleaned, and painted the metal roof areas behind the wood. 36 roof wood.JPG 38 roof wood.JPG 39 roof wood.JPG Then reinstalled with proper fasteners and the missing brackets.

Picked up this Model A brake cross-shaft at the fall Monroe WA swapmeet for $10. Cut and fit it up as a spreader bar. 42 spreader bar.JPG 43 spreader bar.JPG 44 spreader bar.JPG

Looks awesome, love the spreader bar!

  9. Just found this thread, don't know how I missed it. Even more, I can't believe the coupe was in town for 40 years before you bought it and I never knew it existed.
You've got it looking good so far.

I’d like to take credit for the spreader bar idea, but I’ve seen it done on other cars here on the HAMB

Haven't updated this thread in a while although I have been working on the car once it started warming up, along with the work from home due to the covid19 crisis, I get a bit more time due to not having to commute to work.
I have a pair of Guide 903 headlights that I bought years ago on a 32 headlight bar. The mounting bolts were really rusty, and bent up. I found that they make replacement bolts for Model A headlights, so I bought a pair thru Snyders along with these rivet looking screws. Ground down the old rivets, knocked them out and swapped out the mounting bolts. Had to file the slots slightly wider. Screwed them together with the new screws 2020-001.JPG 2020-002.JPG

The decklid that came with the car doesn't look to be original to the car, dented up and has some rust issues in the lower flange. The car was originally a trunk car, the previous owner converted it to rumble seat, I'm putting it back to trunk. Decided to see if I can salvage it. I pried the flange apart, ground the spot welds and got it apart. Rebuilt the lower corners and replaced the entire lower flange. Welded up the misc unused holes. Fixed a hole in the lower outer skin. Need to blast it all before putting it back together, also need to do more dent repairs on the outer. Thinking of getting a shrink 2020-003.JPG 2020-004.JPG 2020-005.JPG 2020-006.JPG 2020-008.JPG 2020-009.JPG 2020-012.JPG ing disc and give that a shot.

Made up the rear floor panels, and bead rolled the edges. Trimmed out a hole for the center of the rear differential. Made some patterns and bent up some sheet metal, then welded up the hump. 2020-007.JPG 2020-007.JPG 2020-010.JPG 2020-011.JPG 2020-022.JPG

The panel below the decklid was solid, but the car was obviously pushed by the spare tire carrier more than once. After trying to straighten it, I decided to replace it with a Brookville panel. The curvature was off and the top stuck out 1/4", which I don't expect. I made a pattern of the proper profile, cut it out of wood with the bandsaw . Cut some slots about an inch apart in the flange, then clamped the profiled blocks to form the proper curve and welded up the slots. Fits nicely now. Need to get the hardware to install it yet.

Welded up the spreader bar. Decided to finish the headlight bar. This bar I've had around for years, the mounting holes were oblonged from someone cutting bolts with a torch. I welded up the holes and redrilled them to 3/8", and ground the bottom of the pads flat. Ct the ends off next to the headlight mount. I fit them up and bolted them to the frame. Made up a jig to measure from, and determined how much each side had to be bent out, heated them up with a torch and bent them out to my jig. Fit up the bar and wleded that. 2020-013.JPG 2020-014.JPG 2020-015.JPG 2020-016.JPG 2020-017.JPG 2020-018.JPG 2020-019.JPG

I haven't updated this thread in a while, This update should be called "What I did last Summer". My goal for the summer was to get all of the sheet metal cleaned up and prepped for epoxy primer,
The 32 grill shell that I'm using had been filled years ago, but not very well. I cut out the old filler, shaped a new piece and welded it in. It'll still need some filler, but so much better than it was.

Bought a shrinking disk and spent alot of time n the deck lid skin, was able to get a crease out of it, along with a number of other high and low spots. Not perfect but much better, Painted the inside 2020-031.JPG and re assembled it. Still need some work on the lower edge. Also spent so 2020-032.JPG me time on areas of the body with the shrinking disc.

Bought one of these portable garages online for $130, set it up in the side yard. I have a breathing air supply compressor that can keep in the house garage and ran a sleeve thru the wall and have the hose out to the portable one. Finished prepping some parts and shot them. After research on epoxy, I went with Kirker Enduroprime. No induction period and short pot life. In the PNW, the period of temps over 70 is pretty short, with evenings drop mostly into the 50's not a very long window to paint outdoors. Shot my first round of parts.

Had a few engine choices in mind, wanted to avoid having to cut into the firewall to keep all the leg room as possible. Came across a deal on a rebuilt 327, was going into an Owens boat, but project was scrapped. Has small valve heads, but I have some aluminum heads I originally bought for an OT car that I sold in 2013. I'll pull it down and check it all out. I'll dress it out vintage style. 2020-036.JPG

Made these up a while ago, these are drains that go in the trunk drainage troughs. Originally the troughs just dump to the ground since the rear floor is originally open there, when using a full floor need to route the water.

Prepped the frame for primer, boxed the tail end where the rear frame rails were bobbed. The chassis will still need the motor mounts welded in, but wanted to get everything sealed up.

This next step I probably should have done before priming the body, but my goal was to get the body sheet metal sealed up first.
Finished cleaning and prepping the body subrails. Primed and painted with rustoleum, same as I did with my pickup over 30 year s ago which has held up fine. I can flip the body by myself pretty easily.

I'm using a set of split 33-34 wishbones that I picked up at the Maumee Ohio swap meet a number of years ago. I couldn't get one of the ends to screw out even with some heat. Plus I didn't care for the welds. Decided to cut them off and weld new ends on. The one that didn't move was pretty rusty inside.

Here is where I am as of today, The body needs finish body work, which I'll start in in the spring. I need to get a trans and get the motor mounts in. Get the steering box mounted and start fitting up all of the other related components. My next step is to install the new hinge pins (have nails temporarily), fit the header panel, visor and fasten the roof sheet metal down.
