anybody know anything.i don't.i got one for damn near free and i'de like to use it.the bolt pattern for the trans will fit what?whats a good site to get info if this one ain't.anybody had any experience with one.
Buick put the torque rating not the horsepower or displacement on the air cleaner a lot back in the 60s. I believe the 310 was a two barrel 401 cu. in. used about 1962 in the LeSabre series. A TH400 from a '64 to '66 401/425 can be swapped with a little work. Frank
it came outta 63' wildcat.i work at a junkyard and it was goin to the crush because scrap was so high.i just cut it out the bottom when the loader was takin it.so it's probobally a 401 huh.cool.are the serial numbers on the side like the 322?
it should be a 401 if it came out of a 63'. it likely had a Dynaflow behind it. a better trans would be a Buick ST400. the ones with the "switch pitch" converters are the best. good luck finding a manual transmission setup for it. they are rare. you can buy them aftermarket though. i believe there are a couple of companies that have recently started to produce these parts. they are NOT cheap though. also you can get an adapter to put a modern GM automatic up to it as well. again, NOT cheap. do a search on the HAMB for "nailhead trannys" and you are likely to find more specific info.
A "310" is a 300 cubic inch "baby nailhead". Nothing in common with the original nailhead engines, and it was available in '64-'65 full size and '64-'67 A bodies.
Heathen is right...Wildcat 310s were 2 barrel 300 small block Buicks. If it's a '64, it'll have aluminum heads and intake...try sticking a magnet to a head. '65-'67s were all iron. Good motors, but finding 4 barrel intakes can be tough...My guess is that it came from a '64 or '65 LeSabre.
Oh yeah, pretty much any BOP bolt pattern trans (except Nailhead) will fit...this includes BOP ST300 2 speed, Turbo 350, 400, 2004R, etc.
i was thinking that 310 had to be a pretty low number for torque on a 401 Nailhead. they were pretty torquey motors in every configuration.
Dad had a 64 wildcat moredoor ht and I am sure it was a 425 ci with a 4 speed auto tranny. That big ole heavy car would get scratch when it hit 2nd gear if you had the pedal buried. He would have slapped me across the room if I had told him that.
alright, now i'm gettin somewhere.first off, thanks for all the info ya'll and second, does anybody know where i can go to find out more on my baby nailhead.i'm not havin so much luck.
Not much was ever done with it performancewise; it was a 300 inch engine in a 400 inch era, and Buicks weren't considered performance vehicles by most people anyway. I did own a '65 Skylark hardtop years ago with the 250hp 300 4bbl engine, a wide ratio T10, and 3.23 gears. It was a manly car, devoid of options (manual steering and brakes), and therefore didn't weigh much. It ran quite well, and surprised more than one Chevelle owner.
v8buick.com is the best place to go for more info...go to the small block forum and search for 300...you'll find out all you need to know. Basically, the only performace aftermarket parts are camshafts...I have one in my '65 Skylark...it's a good motor, but I haven't tried to hot rod it either!
Does anyone have any extra exhaust manafolds they are looking to get rid of or sell? I have a '65 buick skylark but one of my manafolds broke an im looking to buy a new one. Greatly appreciated! Thanks
Not a nailhead, 65 was the first year of a new engine design that replaced the nailhead. They used it as long as they made V8s, up to the early eighties. Trans bolt pattern was the BOP Buick Olds Pontiac also Cadillac. In fact every GM make except Chev will interchange. TurboHydramatic 350, 400 etc.
Try V8Buick.com Lots of guys selling parts all over the country and should be easy to find. The 300 was made from '64 to '67 and still lots of supply out there. Sanderson even has shorty headers for it!
The 300 was also avalable as a 340CI about 67. Kinda scarce tuo. Also, some Buick 350 parts will fit. I put the timing cover, water pump and fuel pump on my 4bbl 300. I think the stick shift flywheel also fits. The stick bellhousing does fit. Very good motor, fit my 68 Chev van better than a SBC! Jim
