Not sure on the std. swaps But when i swaped out my PG for a std 3 speed I went from a mid 18s to mid 17s on a stock motor.

  3. Probably worth at least 1/2 a second...even with the extra shift. The idea is to keep the engine's RPM's in the power band as long as possible.

Was thread about 5-speeds and Nailheads last week. One guy said the GS 455 (I know it's not a Nailhead) went faster with a 3-speed than a 4-speed. Had to do with all the torque of the 455 made 4 gears just one more unneeded shift. Most cars probably do run faster w/ a 4speed, for the reason Rich said. After all, if it was good enough for Ronnie Sox...

Back in high school,67 or so, we use to beat up on the new super sport chevy 4 speeds with old 3 speed syncro fords in a rusted out 56 t-bird.We also were tradeing out shelled trannys once a week.I'm truly a chevy guy but that extra shift left a lot of chevys in the dust.

Yep, if it's a torque monster with a flat curve then the 3 speed has been known to be quicker...
