Hey I'm fixing to start one of those projects. Except $3000.00 is more that I want to spend. Of course I have lots of parts I've rat holed over the years. I just bought a 52 Chevy 2 dr deluxe for $500 and I already have a 55 rear, small journal 327, saginaw 4 spd trans, 38 chevy straight axle, corvair buckets, a choice of manifolds and carbs, full set of early SW guages. Throw that $3000 my way and I'll get to work!

dig that little modified, midget nosed hot rod!

guess if you are going to set the bar, set it high.

It has been a while since I have checked swap meet prices, but here is what I would try:
Glass '23style body, 2x3 box tube frame, look for a discarded front end out of a 37-up ford, junkyard rear (55-64 chevy, olds, pont, etc..) or try to get the rear out of the donor car for the front end. hopefully you will still be less than $1000. motor of choice means you need to get a trans and or adapter to match. Maybe an inline six and three speed from a Chevy converted to v8 (trans needs to be 55-up) add the master cyl, pedal assemblies, some lights etc... and you are at the nexy $1000. this leaves $1000 for tires, wires, fuel tank, seats, nose, exhaust, tune up, guages etc... not much left at all. It can be done: cheap and fast: fast and well: or cheap and well, but it is not easy to do it fast cheap and well.
Landing a cheap or free body/frame combo that doesn't need much work is ideal but not realisitic unless you already have a lead on one.
The other option I would look into would be an early pickup such as model a on a stock a frame with homemade bed, no fenders, and simple drive line.

I can find a cheap 300 inline and tranny, that's not so much a big deal. With a 240 head and some other little things, they seem to wake up from what I have read.

I will not go with a glass body, i'd rather double my budget. Always said if I have an old project it will be steel.

I don't plan on building a world class car, but I do see where the little things come into play when you go from nothing, to something. It's not a full car you start with, it's a body....and maybe a frame.

I plan on buying a front end, rear end, steering soon after the new year, and hopefully find a suitable body to chop up even if it's not the normal hot rod body soon after that.

I first have to clip my 72 and bag it. Do a bit of patch paneling and priming, be ready to go from there!

this one was started this january and driven end of may,
with about a month of not working when my grandfather died.
It was made just with parts lying around,
and it took at least $700 for the random stuff.
    TP
I got alot of parts lying around!

With 3 grand in my hand I could be driving my T next may no problem.Right now it is a bare glass shell 700$ and a 2x4 tube frame I built from 10$ worth of used tubing and a bunch of scrounged parts. The 2300$ balance would cover everything I need to finish my car

In the real world $3000,00 wont get you started. In the mag. bull world you will build a 32 3 window cpe. with a blown flatty and have money to spare.

Realistically, on-topic rides aren't going to happen from scratch for most folks at that budget.

However there's plenty of off topic cars, and your best bet is something that's already cool, but damaged, and therefore can be bought for 2K and fixed for 1K. Good luck.

Wow, even though you scored some incredible deals to only have $840 in axles, body , and frame with springs, you still ended up right at 6 grand. That shows why $3000.00 aint going far.

Unless you already have alot of part collected or someone is willing to give you free stuff, and lets not forget all the tools a place to work and the ability to use them,That would be the only way it could be possably done, how many projects start thinking the can be done for 5-7k and end up being 15k,Reality

I traded a bunch of tattoo work for my '62 Chevy pickup with a blown up 350. It had nasty monster truck tires on it that I traded for a good 305 short block. I traded my 350 LT1 heads for a pair of rebuilt 305 heads. I swapped my 350 4 bolt block core for a later GM steering column (mine was crapped out). I paid for some firestone tires, a pair of shorty headers and Cherry Bombs, a wiring kit, and gasket kit. I've paid for little crap like Bondo and small parts. I traded pinstriping and tattoo work for trim rings, steelies, etc. I bought a used bed from a junk yard. So far, I have about a grand total cash involved. Another 2K and I can have the body smooth and painted. I think it'll be a fairly cool $3,000 ride when it's all done.

  27. I just sold my 33 a few months back and that very picture was my inspiration too but needed the bucks for other things so I had to let her go but this picture still hangs here as a sad reminder to an unfinished project

I'm at about $1600 right now that includes a $700 purchase price, motor tranny and rear are all in, front suspension is all new parts and rear springs are new, front brakes are new also. swapped labor for motor and trans, had the rear end,had wheels, chassis is done! need to finish floors, run brake lines and hang fenders/nose, build exhaust, and have glass cut. I'm way over on time but I might make the $3000 budget.[IMG]
