Projects 292 Y block pricing

  1. hello.
    i have been offered a 292 y block complete with a stuck cylinder due to a blown gasket.
    couple of extra 2 barrel intakes, a fenton 3x2 intake,red headers,extra internal parts,chromed vc,moon valley cover,extra connecting rod and pistons.
    what would u price that if you were buying?

  2. I've seen rebuildable engines from $100 on up depending. If it's the early Y-up to '56, not much. If '57 or later, you want to research the block # and head #'s to see what you're getting. Need '57 or later dizzie and heads to get larger ports, posted heads, 2 bbl manifolds worth nothing, pistons may be worn. Go to Mummerts y-block site and do some research. I run a 292 in the 29. Heavier than a SBC or SBF, but the price was right and it gets along quick enough for me.

    Moon cover and Fenton manifold are worth the most. There are still a lot of 292’s out their. Sounds like your scouting to make a few bucks. The white metal is the cheapest to ship. Figure your $$$’s there.

    It sounds like it isn't something you have to have. In situations like that where I'm interested if the price is right so I can trade or sell off some of the parts to help finance a current project I ask the guy what he wants. I tell him I don't want to insult him with a figure less than he wants/has in mind. Sometimes you can reach a deal that way and other times not. JMO.

    I don't think the price he's asking leaves me room to make any money if I sell.
    I have a 59/60 292,It came with the 55 Vannete,It spinned but only a 1/4"a at time.
    I took it apart and found a few gallons of water in the pan but minimal rust in the cylinders....they look like they can be honed..
    I like Y blocks and I been wanting to have one built for either of my projects...
    So when this one popped up I figured it might be worth the risk...

    He wants 800.00
    Is the Fenton a decent intake?or is the value solely on the name brand.

    That's the way I look at things...
    They might have more value in a trade for a service or part than cash...
    People can get cash anywhere but vintage speed parts are getting scarced

    800 for a stuck Y-block? Well there's he extras I guess. I think you might be over spending, I'd price out the few good parts and think of the rest as scrap.

    Then again, I'm not hunting Y-blocks.

    I'd go along with around 100 for the core 292 unless it has the good 312 heads. There are a lot of runners floating around for not a whole lot. I'm not current on the intake and other pieces but I'd say that is where the actual value is.
    With the right set of pipes there are few engines in the world that sound better than a good Y block though.

    Unless it's a specific early casting (55 bird restoration) both heads or block they aren't worth much. The late heads (posted is better) are more and mentioned above. The Fenton manifold is not a performance part, just eye candy. 2 barrel manifolds aren't worth the shipping cost. I've got clean, turning 292's in storage, all with the generators, carbs, etc, late model truck motors, they're $300 tops.

    Heres the link to John Mummert's site on casting numbers and other info. Cracked heads are not unknown, so just the casting number is no guarantee. Core shifts often affect overbores much beyond 30 over stock for high performance applications. Ask me how I know.

  9. I bought a running '59 292 truck engine for $100 about a year ago, took it apart to check it out and found the block cracked at the main bearing areas. So I started looking for another one and ended up with a '57 292 that was stuck for $200. At Carlisle last weekend a guy was asking $200 for a 292 block freshly bored, a set of unposted "G" heads and crank. I guess what I'm saying is unless the other parts you could get with the deal are worth something $800 is on the high side.

    Runners go from $100-500 on some of the Facebook sites.

    Nonrunners go from free to $250.

  11. As a perspective, in May I sold a running 1957 292 complete with all accessories and the transmission for $500.

    Just sold my running 272 without carb, dizzy, pulleys, brackets,gen ,starter and balancer, Ran good before I took those parts I listed off. Sold it for $250. Customer picked it up as shipping would kill any deal.

    Good advice above. Either get the price down a lot or run. If you have to pay shipping run like Forest Gump.

    On the manifold Edelbrock is the best and Offenhauser the worst, $300-400 range for a Fenton. There is a complete ready to run with carbs, linkage, lines at the Bay asking over $1K. Not sure on the Moon cover but they list at $85 new now. Maybe $25-50 used. I’d only want a Fenton if I had their rocker covers and headers too. If headers were new you can check the price a would not want used ones since most will start rusting after use.

  16. The intake is worth around $300, unless it is cracked or broken. I bought a running 272 for $100 a couple of years ago.
    He also had a running 292 for $250. I do not see $800 in your proposed pile. It will cost more then a SBC to rebuild, about as much as a nailhead. I was lucky, new pistons and bearings, worn cam, lifters and rocker arms. Went with a supercharger cam and high lift rockers.

    I purchased my Red's headers for $350. I would check to make sure the welds are not broken anywhere, I've had to have mine repaired. I looked up prices on the fenton 3x2 intake on ebay a while back and found one being sold for close to $500. The fenton intake flows somewhere in the middle between the edelbrocks and the offenhausers. Ted Eaton did a 3x2 comparison a while back. Cheap chrome valve covers can be had for about $40. Would definitely check out ford-y-block.com and yblockguy.com, there is a ton of information there, casting numbers and everything. 292's can be bored up to .120" over, so the block should be salvageable, but those extra pistons may not do you any good. I think the asking price may be a little steep. Hope this helps.

    I have one that I took apart and it's sitting...
    I was thinking if I get it for cheaper I can start messing with them..

  19. What are the casting numbers/letters on the heads?

    Check the casting number on the side of the rocker arms as well.
