I ran across a guy today selling a 283/Powerglide cause he swapped a 350/350. Just wondering if anybody has an idea of a fair price. Supposedly it was running and shifting fine when pulled. Also I want it for a 59 Apache if there are any thoughts.(budget build)
What year engine/trans are we talking about? Cast iron VS aluminum Powerglide; big difference there. Probably a 2 barrel motor? 2 barrel 283 with a cast iron Powerglide, $200.00 tops; 4 barrel 283 with an aluminum Powerglide, $300.00 tops. And that's with more than a handshake guarantee. For a running engine??? I would buy every one I could get for those prices. I have a tough time finding any running small block for under $500 anymore. Of course RUNNING is the key word.
The cast iron powerglide leaves a little to be desired. If it runs and shifts great but you probly wont want to pay to have it built. And make sure you have an engine crane or chainfall strong enough to pick the both up if there still together. That combo weighs a ton.
I just got a nice clean 283 for free, 'sposedly rebuilt that the previous owner removed from his car for a 350 because he "didn't know the history on it". Before this one, the last two good running 283s I've paid $200 or $250 for. I bought a '62 Chevy K10 truck for $100 a couple years back and it came with a good 283, too.
59 Apache would have used front engine mounts, just like the 57 passenger cars used, so you're set there. NO side mounts in 57; those came in 58, but the trucks still used the front mounts. I'm sure there were trucks that had the cast iron Powerglide, but the bellhousing mounts for a truck with a Powerglide may be a little difficult to find; I don't know how close the passenger car bellhousing mounts are. I'd try and get as much of the mounts and accessories as possible to save you some work, time, and money. IF your truck happened to come with a Powerglide, keep in mind the 57 and 58 Powerglides had different shift patterns; 57/P-N-D-L-R, 58/P-N-R-D-L. The valve bodies were different because of the patterns. Good luck bringing your truck back to life. I had a 58, X-Navy, 3/4 ton that someone had installed a 55, 4 barrel, 265 in at some time. It was a good looking and running truck, even with the extra long box. Of course it was Navy gray. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.

Wow ,I have a running 283 ,two barrell with a cast powerglide you can drive before you buy ,i'll throw in the ram horn manifolds ,generator ,radiator ,drive shaft and rear end for $200.
Well, after seeing it and using the search I now know what I am getting. Its a 283/Powerglide out a 57 Nomad. The block casting number is 3731548 and the I.D. is F408F. According to Squirrels past posts the engine vin is supposed to be 2 bbl 283 powerglide from the Flint plant. I'm not sure why he would take it out if it's numbers matching but to each his own. I know it's not the holy corvette engine. Really curious if the Nomad thing adds value and whether or not to use it in a budget build. Thanks in advance for any input.
