My plan is to run my 283 bored .060 over with the power packs, but upgrade to z28 springs and new valves.I'm also looking to go dual qaud for intake carbs. My car will way roughly 2700lbs so low end torque doesn't matter to much. I will be using it as my daily driver but would like to wind up the Rpms every now and then, also will be stick shift

    any recommendations? Thanks

.480-.500 lift will push the RPM range up to zing. Read the cam cards from some of the manufactures as well. You will be able to narrow your choice in a short period of time. Will compression be 9 1/2-10 to 1? Rear gear is?

Lunati 20109 or Elgin E-900-P (same grind gm 3736097) drove like a stock 283 and ran 12 second quarter miles. Sounds good through open headers as well. Easy on parts. Lash it at .008" / .018"

Just put in a mild cam. Don't do valve springs until you have the cam.... They need to match to do it right.

The stick will make it more forgiving.

You probably should reach out to Ross engines. I think his name is Goatroper, he knows those, and can probably steer you in the right combination direction.

My 283 had the power packs and 327 springs with a 350 horse 327 cam, 3836151, from GM. Great lopey idle and insane RPM. Put one in a 350 years later and it wasn't very impressive, the extra cubes killed it. So don't go too wild with the numbers, little engines don't like real big cams.

151 cam is a sweetheart bumpstick. I've been using it for years (3836151 is the complete number) in nearly all the sbc engines I've rebuilt.

FYI, for clarity, there are ISKY, Crower, Crane cams that would perform similar to the XE268, Like the 270/280 Mega for example, I am just illustrating some cams mentioned here.

I have a pp 283 in my car running headers with dual 2.5 exhaust through smitthys with a 4-speed behind it has a edelbrock intake and a 650 edelbrock carb. What kind of rpms should i turn this engine? Seems it would turn as tight as i want to, damn thing sounds like a 2 stroke!!

The 097 Duntov recommended above will give you the official sound track of the 283 years...very mild lope and clatter, JUST enough to let the peasants know that you have a CAM, and an excellent performer in the 283 and the 301's and 352's once built by 283 owners with some money.

"...So don't go too wild with the numbers, little engines don't like real big cams..."
I think that was the Duntov's secret...it made the little engines happy through their whole range from idle to violent death. Wilder cams were available from the aftermarket and soon from Chevy, like the 283/315 30-30, but the Duntov still has a fan club. while the others have vanished.

Probably as high as you should go with iron heads.

my 283 was .080 over with flat tops bowtie 2.02 angle plug heads angle milled at 1 degree to the nubbins. high 12 second quarter miles in my 3400 lbs 55 Chevy with the cam I recommended above. Drove like a stock 283, raced like a champ.

Sadly, I tried some power pack heads on that motor later on. It was a total dog with no power whatsoever and a far cry from my 2.02 heads. I don't think you will like the power packs. Get some 461 heads instead. sell the power packs to someone who wants to go slow.

2.02's on a 283? cool.... I would think the opposite since your valves would be close to the cylinder wall, you would loose 1/4 of the valve flow....

I built a 283 with a comp cams high enery 268 with 305 heads that had 1.94/1.54 valves with an old edelebrock powermaster intake and a 600-650cfm holley and it ran pretty strong and had a nice sound at idle.
