Getting closer. Bed back on. Seeing the sunlight outside the shop for the first time since January.

That upper shock mount is probably going to shake those poor fenders to death. The fender brace is not strong enough to keep the fenders from shaking, let alone have the shocks attached to it.

I recommend building a separate shock mount with much more heft. There are many examples in threads and pictures on the HAMB, or check the websites of chassis parts manufacturers. Something like an F-1 front mount works great, if you have a thicker backing plate behind it inside the frame channel.

I really debated that. The fender braces are stronger than you think and tied together with the headlight bar. If these were the later stamped design I would agree whole-heartedly, but these are the earlier forged style and the lower portion is nearly the same thickness as the F-1 mount. With me bouncing the truck in the shop I cannot detect any movement, but road vibrations will be different for sure. I hope it's not an issue, but if it is I will take your advice.

  8. Nice, nice, nice! That's almost exactly the route I wanted to go with my [inherited from my dad] 30 closed cab. Somebody stole it before I could bring it home...never recovered.

Sorry to hear that. This build is a sentimental one for me. My Dad passed away in Dec. of 2008 and he was a Model A and Early V8 guy but liked them restored stock. He bought his first Model A when I was 5 in 1970 and it was a 29 CC Pickup. The chassis from that truck is still under the '29 Phaeton my Sister inherited. I bought my very first car at the age of 13 and it was a '29 CC Pickup as well. I drug it out of a field in South Dakota on one of the wild goose chases we went on. I sold that truck a few years later, but have always had a soft spot for them. So, I got to thinking it would be cool to have a '28-'29 CC pickup with a Flathead to have my current love of Hot Rods mixed with the history of my Father and our escapades together. It is the most fun I have had in many years of my old car hobby!

Exhaust done. All that's left is wiring, and replacing the leaky water pump.

Maiden voyage today. Put 100 trouble free miles on it. Temp right at 180, 50psi oil pressure , stops and steers great. Very happy!

Nice work ! Give me a text on Thursday. I plan on being at the bbq - not sure if I'm taking the truck or roadster.

Well the engine has been suffering a lot of blow by and is getting more tired with every mile. So, I took advantage of Speedway's Cyber Monday deal and ordered a SCAT 286" Rotating assembly. Going to yank the motor over Christmas break and get it bored and stroked! I am still debating keeping the Potvin 3/8 cam or spending the extra $700 for a new ISKY 1007B and lifters. The Potvin cam should tone down a little with the extra cubes. But I am looking for some low end torque. Thoughts?

I added some structure to the fender braces for the shock mount. We will see how this holds up.

The engine puked last fall, 5 of the 8 cylinders had broken rings. So the engine got upgraded. 286" Scat rotating assembly, 1.6 Valves, 185G valve springs, Isky 1007B cam, Lots of bowl work, valves unshrouded (not a full relief), Stromberg Big97 carbs (not on it in the video).

The rivets on the other gas tank leaked. So I bought basically the same tank without the riveted brackets and strapped it in. I don’t have a gas gauge so I came up with a way to create about 2.5” of reserve fuel in the tank with a valve connected to a cable in the cab.
