Technical 28/29 A Roadster Quarter Panel Brace Location?

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by crazycasey, Apr 17, 2021.

  1. Hello,

I’m working on a 28/29 A Roadster (build thread link in my signature). A lot of the original pieces of this car were mangled or missing. The car was evidently cut apart with a torch. I have no idea why...

Anyway, I’m sorry for creating a few different question posts here over the years BUT, a lot of the pictures and posts I have found on the HAMB and Ford Barn are conflicting what evidence remains from the original car, and I just want this body to be as close to original as possible. I’d post this in my build thread, and I may post some version of it there, but specific posts such as this seem to get more eyeballs on them.

My question is about the location of the inner quarter panel braces that connect the top of the quarters to the subrails, ahead of the rumble compartment.

A picture I found here on the HAMB, and the shape of my replacement brace, both suggest that the following placement would be correct.

    My Car:

That picture from the HAMB that seems to support this placement:

However, my subrails appear to suggest that the brace was originally positioned higher up on the subrail, and further rearward:

So that would land the brace roughly here on my car (but of course it’s far too long for that positioning):

Though this picture from the HAMB seems to support this more rearward positioning:

Anyway...what do you all think? What attaches to these braces? Is anything really even dependent upon their positioning? Does anyone here have a really original body that’s never been apart?

Finally, thanks for always bailing me out, The HAMB. Appreciate you guys.

    -Casey

My 31 coupe had the braces like Bobs, on the lower part. Only thing on them were the rumble hinges ( on the rear ones) Mine were original , I dont have pics cause I modified the sub rails to fit a 32 frame. Was also a Canadian car.
