    I have a 1954 270 hemi.

I was wondering if a 3 speed trans out of a 1954 1/2 ton truck with a poly motor, will the trans fit my hemi Bell housing or will the poly bell will fit my hemi?

There's is 54 pickup in the junkyard, if the trans works w/ my hemi I want to get it. Thanks for the help

  2. Hemi and poly blocks are the same. The heads and related parts are the only difference.

  3. I've got a 57 Plymouth 3 speed w/OD that would bolt up if you're interested. $100 Problem would be getting it to you. Heavy mother!

Those 3-speeds are kind of neat. You can hold them with one hand they're so small. No synchro's in first, but no big deal.

Are these Granny gear 3 speed trans? or would it be OK for a hot rod?

I was under the impression that the 270 didn't come out until '55, and that the '54 engine was 241 ci. Am I wrong?

It might be a VT block rather than a D553. Dodge was using chrysler engines in their big trucks because the 241 didn't have enough power to haul the dirt. I have some memory of the 2 ton trucks being the first to come out with the 270 and were stamped with a VT number. The VT blocks usually have a harmonic balancer while the cars didn't.

So VT in 54, D553 in 55 is what I remember reading. I was born in 54, so I don't have any first-hand knowledge, ha.

    It is a 55, I pulled it out of a grain truck. I don't know why I put 54?

You can swap complete packages between engines. There are several variation in trans bolt patterns but if you keep the trans, bell and flywheel together then its just nuts and bolts. Expect low first gear ratios and no syncros in truck trans.
