When I turn over my 235 engine the solenoid get hot and smokes. Engine will eventually turn over but I know the solenoid isn't normal. Any input from you old timers would be appreciated from this greenhorn.

First thing that comes to my mind is check all the electrical connections. I just had a truck that was hard to start, you could see the negative battery cable smoke while trying to start it. I cleaned and replaced and tightened anything that was loose, taped, or junk and now it starts like a new vehicle.

  3. Have a look at your contacts on the solenoid (inside), you will probably find they are dirty/full of crud, try cleaning these up first.
