I have a 216 in a 49 Chevy that dies when you get on the brakes no matter how high the idle is set. As long as you throw it in neutral and gas on it when stopping it will stay running. Seems like its loaded up after it dies and is hard to crank. I decided that the float was to high and sloshing over so I lowered the float. Might have helped a tad. Any other ideas?
Sounds like fuel mixture is out. It may be too lean when you are slowing down. Should be easy enough with the stock Carter carb. You haven't got anything running off engine vacuum (like a brake booster) have you?
