Event Coverage 2023 AMBR Award Contenders

  1. A lot of rework on the body of the 36 that is easy to miss. The builder has great skills and a keen eye for proportions.

As I said earlier that's great info. I wondered who did the striping. A job like that, the long-line striping, I think takes an entirely different skill set than the decorative style you see most often. And you're absolutely right - Don Groff is an artist in metal. He did a custom hood for a friend of mine who's building a chopped/channeled '32 Ford pickup and it's absolutely extraordinary.
Naw, more like "in the groove"! :D

Having known the owners of #9 for many years and their determination to get this car to this show I'm surprised Mrs. Chadd hasn't been sitting in the car all weekend. #9 really nice car but the winner could be Jack Chisenhall with his 32 roadster???????????

The amount of TIG beads that you can't see is what I find impressive on this '32. Bob

  6. After seeing this roadster in a different setting, This car really does stand out, the rake, the parts and traditional windshield frame & wheels look good.

I am not a fan of all the panel pin stripping but that does add a little traditional flavor, I do wish all the contenders good luck . HRP

Yeah, I don’t we we see a resurgence of the age old technique of panel-striping, but this one is rolling the dice at the big show. It needed an attention getter, and this top to bottom, inside out theme does the trick. Reminds me of jus about my all time favorite: McMullen roadster. I think I go over to the photoshop thread play.

I've never been a fan of black colored wheels with blackwall tires.

After studying them over and over and finding more pictures of them on another site. I think they're all winners in their own right.

I really do not like the rear quarters and huge fender wells on number 8. There really doesn’t seem to be one car that jumps out and is the obvious winner.

I'm thinking that those side shots that are done by someone connected to the show aren't even close to the best shots of those cars, They just show each contender in the same side view. Shooting decent shots indoors with the lights in the buildings is a serous challenge. The black 32 with the panel striping is a prime example. Not real interesting in that side shot but it gets interesting when you see some other folks shots of it.
Agreed that a few of the cars seem to miss a mark or two as far as getting it right. No doubt impeccible workmanship and quality but sometimes an idea works and some time it doesn't. Sometimes being different just for the sake of being different doesn't help the cause.

This looks like something "AVOID the BOYD" would have built in the 90's.

That’s a trend now, I see it a lot…surprised to see it in AMBR….but it’s better than the 20” chromes with rubber and tires on the red car.

For me the panel striped 32, when I saw the straight on profile, meh. But then 3/4 shot with the white headers and guts, yep! Tough to make a car look good from every angle. I'm sure they're all stunners, kudos to the folks that build them. Got to get to that show one day...

  19. The panel striped rod is MUCH better in person than in photos.
    But, still not my favorite.

Well, I assume the trophy has beed awarded by now, I haven't seen the news yet. I was at the show myself and came home before the presentations, after 3 days I was worn out, dog tired. I just wanted to jump into this thread before the winner is announced and say that after seeing and photographing all of them, I'm still undecided. I still like #2, & #3; those are both great cars. But #5 really does look great in person, better than the side shot in the OP.

I got a lot of photos of all the cars (except for the red one). I still have to go though all my photos, I hope they came out OK, as @Mr48chev said, it's a difficult environment for photography. I will share some of them here when I can. But first, I'm going to go do an internet search and see if I can find out who the winner is.

I'd like to see the #5 car with real magnesium Halibrands (sans the plates) and a more conservative belt line pinstriping. The engine really hits the mark though. The front wheels are too "out-of-the-box" common these days and the rears should be the earlier smaller window Hals.
Sorry, I've just never been a fan of that style of pinstriping, not even on the McMullen roadster - too busy.
    And the winner is........???

I like it better knowing it was owner-built. It has some really neat details.

Jack Chisenhall, the owner/builder, is also the president of Vintage Air.

Great choice. Owner built with a little help from Brizio.

Me? No I didn't, but I did see his pickup! Got some photos of it, but Chip was not around. Saturday was unreal, highest number of attendees at the show ever, but something like 50,000.
