Hot Rods 2013 AMBR Contenders are up on Hot Rod Magazine blog

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jimmy B, Jan 24, 2013.

  1. I was just checking the Hot Rod Magazine website and saw Thom Taylor had posted the contenders for the 2013 "America's Most Beautiful Roadster" award. The majority of the roadsters that are competing for this award really are beautiful. Nice to see Aussie Joe Cane competing.

John Mumford '27 T roadster is simply outstanding, Brizio Street Rods have done a fantastic job. I hope John Gunsaulis Woodward special ties with the Mumford T.

  3. I would vote for the 27

  4. The Mumford T is outstanding.

That's given me an idea, I will add a poll, I just need to work out how.

    :edit: can't add poll.

Would love to see our PNW boys win . . . but that track nose T is a dream. Think you're right Jimmy, a tie would be sweet.

Haha I was thinking the same thing. Lot's of outstanding cars this year. The Jim Farley 32 roadster was built here in Mass at Dave Simard's shop. Lots of handmade details on it. I got to see it in the raw, pretty amazing.

Six real contenders, two maybes and two missed the mark isn't that bad in that competition.

I'm sure the workmanship on all of them was outstanding and sure wish I was headed down there for this one.

The Mumford/Brizio roadster will take home all the marbles. If it doesn't there's something wrong???????

I was there yesterday setting up the Jim Farley car (we built the display for him) and I have to say that there are some nice cars. These photos don't do any of the cars justice as you can't see the fit and finish, only the profile.

Overall i was please to see that most were leaning towards pure traditional styled cars as opposed to super slick stuff.

Some great cars. I like the 33 a lot. The wheels are interesting. The track roadster is really tasty.

I am glad that the contenders are trending towards traditional. All that crap from a few years ago had me losing hope.
Mariani, Mumford, Chapman in that order for me.

I like the '27. Not sure what's going on with that ’32 Phaeton. I'm sure the details are nice, but the proportions are WAY off.

Glad it isn't just me that thinks somethings wrong with the Phaeton. I'm sure the workmanship is top notch, but the proportions and the design, YUCK!

I was involved in the design on two of the contenders. The limo tub was NOT one of them...

  23. In the last several years there seems like there has been a change
in the judging criteria for the AMBR finalists. Is the actual intended
use of the car given any consideration, since the 33 Bonneville Roadster
was actually at Bonneville and run? That salt gets into places, that
short of complete repainting, anodizing and replating, the car would never
be as before it was ever run.

    Just Wondering, John

No one asked for my opinion, and this is all in good fun. These dudes put these cars out there for judging so I'll blow some hot air:

909—’28 Modified Roadster—John Gunsaulis- This car is beautiful in it's simplicity. It fits the definition of modified roadster. There's some neat one off details in this car. A contender for sure.

910—’32 High Boy Roadster—Harold Victor- Beautiful job. But for some reason reminds me of the 33 that won 2 years ago. Plus headlights and minus fenders. And meh on the wheels/tires.

906—’33 Bonneville Roadster—Mark and Dennis Mariani- Bitchin. It's a race car. Don't see it winning though.

912—’27 Roadster—John Mumford- Clearly the front runner. Don't have to explain why. Love the restraint with the chrome.

904—’33 Full Fendered Roadster—Harold Chapman- I wanna see more pics of this. At first I brushed it off because i didn't like how the wheels look like a star or the color. But I want to see the motor and interior.

905—’28 Phaeton High Boy—Joe Cane- Neat car but the wheels/tires= meh. i'm sick of those front wheels. Not big on the suspension.

911—’32 High Boy Roadster—John Colendich Jr- Not Big on the color or wheels/tires. The megs make me hate it. Why put a flathead in this? You negate the vintageness of the flatty with all the modern stuff.

907—’32 High Boy Roadster—Chick Koszis- Street roddy but slick and it looks fast. I kind of like it.

901—’32 High Boy Roadster—Cole Wolfswinkel- Big ass wheels, boss 429, goofy doors. I hate it. It'll probably win.

913—’32 Chevy Roadster Pick Up—Ira Horowitz- No.

    903—’32 Phaeton—Timothy Tarris- Hell no.

902—’32 High Boy Roadster—James Farley- The exhaust turns me off. This car sort of runs against the black Hemi '32 which I think is slicker.

HANDS DOWN..... Mumford by Brizio. Followed by the Bonneville 33. All of the sudden being a contender for the AMBR doesn't seem so out of reach after all. That long thing is more absurd than the oversized thing from last year. Seems to me cars should be voted on just to be a contender... some playoffs for lack of a better term. I think the promoters struggle to get worthy contenders on time then settle for back ups to fill the empty spaces.
