I have access to a butt load of 2" black pipe for free. Has anyone made an exhaust system out of it? If so how did you make your bends? It looks like the cheap HF benders "hight" bend it but before I drag it all home I would like to see if anyone else has used it with any success.....Thanks

I believe "black" pipe is universally acknowledged to be plumbing material, not car-building material.

My thought was it is the same od as exhaust, heavier and free. Are thier any issues other than convention that you know of the should steer me away from considering it?

I personally would never want to add anything "heavier" to my car. Hot rods are light and fast. So any parts that equal "slow and heavy" go into a pile in the yard.

  5. I agree with the too heavy part. Bending it up for curves would probably be troublesome.

Haul it to the scrap yard and out that money toward some exhaust tubing.

plumbing pipe is sized by ID. Exhaust pipe is sized by OD. It wont fit the shoes of an exhaust bender. It's a bad idea that most everyone here once pondered but passed on the idea.

with the price of scrap iron, Pickup the free black iron, sell it along woth other old iron laying around.

Buy correct exaust material and be happy with the results.

I had a buddy who's Dad owned his own electrical contractors buisness. He would use 2" conduit for his exhaust on his winter beaters. Galvanized so it wouldn't rust out. I would not use it on a rod or kustom.

Take it home, you could always make a table or something out of it. A old man once told me "If somebody offers you a bucket of shit, spread it in your yard and wash out the bucket"

I don't know about a long length of blackpipe,
but the local steel yard sells 90 degree bends of the similar thickness as BP.
I'm considering using them just near the exhaust outlets. (1 1/2 ID)

uummmmm hell no. Keep looking, you are not looking hard enough. Cut up old cast away headers, search muffler/exhaust shop trash cans. Junkyard used exhaust systems carry a vast array of mandrel bends and sizes. Piece of cake look harder.
