"Luxo-Barge" blast from the past! - From the April 1963 issue of 'Car Life Magazine' - Road Test - 1963 Mercury S-55 'Parklane' - 427 2X4-BBL 4-Spd! Imagine being able to walk into a new car showroom today, dropping just a little over 4G's down on the counter and driving out in a brand new, 2-ton-plus, Mercury Parklane "luxo-barge" optioned out like this one was - with a 425hp dual-quad 427, a 4-speed top-loader tranny and 4.11 gears! Hey Mart That Is Cool! Propelling 4600 pounds (with driver) down the track to a 15.1 1/4 mile! need one, want one, gotta have one......... .
Even at 4600 lbs, That 15.1 ET seems like a bit of slug by today's standards, but I'll bet most of that was due to it likely, *completely annihilating* the factory 8.00X14 bias-ply rubber. I'll bet a set of 9-inch slicks (maybe even just some 'cheater-slicks'), a bit of suspension work and a super-tune up on the engine would have done absolute wonders for the ET'! What an ungodly sleeper!
