Here's a YouTube video of drags, with no frills, the way we did it in Texas before the "gold chainer's" arrived. Caddo is a WWII concrete triangle military airport where the NHRA eventually came in. Notable racers on the video are Bobby Langley with his "Scorpion" A/F, Vance Hunt A/F, A/MR team of Don Ross (a current HAMB member) Tony Fite with late driver Skipper Harder who later ran A/F under the banner of "American Kids" ( right Don ?). Also Joe Athey B/G black Willys sedan and others I probably missed. All flag starts. The famous "Auggie" , August Hartkoft aka "Hands" with his wailing white '56 Chevy E/G with the radiused wheel wells at 4:39 on the vid and later under the hood. Great footage, I will have to show this to my dad. He will probably recognize some of the cars and will like to see Hands Hartkopf
I remember the Staff getting all over the fabulous Eddie Hill, with his twin-Pontiac digger, dual slicks... Eddie tore 'gaping holes' in the asphalt 'buildup area', with so much H.P. Hot Rod Magazine report, ah...so long ago!
Nice video there Mick...Don Ross car was "U.S.Kids"and I hate to tell you Atwater Mike, someone pulling your leg about Eddie Hill,,Caddo Mills was 100% concrete,,No asphalt in sight..
Great video . Y'all might be interested with these . The back of one said ," B.V. Langly's Scorpion , best appearing crew Award 11-3-57 Caddo Mills , Texas . I need to get these to Don ?
Bobby is right Mike, Caddo Mills was/is 100% concrete, built by the government for the WWII effort. It can still be seen as "Caddo Mills Muni Airport" on google maps (earth view is best) link: https://www.google.com/maps/place/C...b6ca834a19b35d!8m2!3d33.0656732!4d-96.2277554 The wide section, on the right, was the drag strip. The bottom right corner was the starting line. The more skinny strip, along the bottom, was the pits. No bleachers at all in the day. We parked along the strip and sat on the hoods of our cars. Right again Bobby, on the Don Ross car, they were "U.S. Kids" team. brain's firing on ~5 cyl. these days.
Awesome video. Saw a couple vehicles in there that were at least 64 models. Cool just the same. There was a local strip in my area when I was a kid that was on a defunct airbase. All concrete as well. Thanks for posting.
Glenn, after watching the video several times,Those coupes run by so fast,it was hard to identify...Sorry
At 3:15 there is a Ford pick-up in the near lane, after launch the sedan in the far lane pulls out in front and a black 'something' appears in front of the pick-up - or am I seeing things. I've watched it several time times and it is still there.....
Swamp Buggy sounds familiar. Bobby (wbrw32) may remember. He sold speed equipment to all us Dallas hot rodders when he worked at Custom Automotive.
Thanks Bob .... I was able to freeze the frame, but I don't know how to capture it, let alone sharpen them up.... maybe one of these young-un's around here could help?
