Had the identical car back in 1971 ...6 banger , 3 on the tree , grey bench seats ....wife ( now EX-wife ) hated the car & referred to the colour as "married blue" , so I sold it and bought her a new Plymouth Duster . Like I said , ex-wife . :D Hell , shoulda kept the Chevy and sold the wife as it turned out .

Looks good Brian! I'm sure it'll be as nice as the other's you've done up.
Look forward to seeing it in person when it's all done.

  4. The 61 and 2 post cars with 409's are very popular , I have friends with them and they get a lot of attention along with the bubbletops:cool:. For now i am nesting a Beach Boys version 62 SS 409 dual quad 4-speed but would love to branch out and acquire a bubbletop or Biscayne, :). Nice work on your project ....it certainly will draw a crowd.....thanks for the thread.

    Gus,
I run a G-force 5 speed cluchless and a Ram 470CW in the 62 and will run a G-force 4 speed clutchless in the 61, what else would you like to know

  7. Being that I bleed Chevy Orange, I'm awfully curious about your short block, like what crank and also the rod length. Very nice looking stuff!!!

The total production figures for 409's in '61 was only 142! Making them very rare today. This also marked the first year of the SS. There was a total of 453 Supersports made in 1961. The 1961 SS 409 could be considered the father of the muscle car for Chevy.

Have all the block sanding done. I put one last coat of high build primer on and will 400 wet sand before paint. I also sealed the bottom with red oxide sealer, and just need to paint the dash before painting

I ran a 59 Chevy stocker back in the Junior Stock days and I just thought Id let you know that those center drive shaft support bearings will be a problem if you dont come up with something stronger or a 1 piece driveshaft

Are you going NHRA/IHRA Super Stock or NSS?

Love the "dare to be different" attitude!

Thats just a touch more professional then my $45 1959 283/185 4 speed Biscayne was in 1966. Didnt need all that fancy stuff to hook up Casler recaps & go 15.54 wirh 4.56 gears & a 50 lb flywheel. All I had was 1 air bag on the right side. Total investment of $600. Best of luck to you, Ill be watching for the car

A most awesome find for sure! Keep us posted...

  30. I remember seeing a '61 (In a little nicer condition though) in a tow yard in Fresno, CA back in 1992... I offered them $300 and the guy laughed at me an said "Shit, I could get $800 for this thing all day long!"

I laughed and him and said "Good luck!"

    Man, those were the days...
