This is not my usual side on the HAMB, but I was thinking, has anyone ever taken the fins of one of these? Just saw this on another thread. I've seen plenty of customs since the '50s but never this.
Go to the "Photoshop" thread. One of the genius's there will do a great job of visualizing it for you. Just supply a real good pic.
Yeah, think they're bolt on. Have seen photo of one with fins removed. Frankly the whole point of the late 50s Mopars is the fins.
The fins on the '60 Dodges are not removable. But I have seen them cut off and filled a couple of times, mostly from photos in the early '60s when fins instantly went out of style, about 1963. I'll see if I can find a picture of one without its fins. It ends up looking like a '63 Ford. For the record, there are two 1960 Dodge bodies, and they each have different fin designs: the smaller, new-for-'60 Dart-bodied models like the Phoenix, Seneca, etc. and the larger Polara/Matador.
I kind of like the Dart body fins but the ones on the big Polara look like the styling guys just stuck them on and couldn't get them long enough! I even thought that in 1960!
A funny side thought just came to me. My dad came home one day with a set of those Dodge flipper caps like the red Dart. He said he wanted to put them on his '62 Catalina! It had cool Pontiac dog dishes. I talked him out of it!
I just recalled another reason people cut fins off their cars around the time they were new - because fins were taxed in other countries!
Here is someone's idea of a "1961" (it's not) Dodge. It's just a photoshop of a '60 with fins removed.
I like fins, and the 60 dart is one of my favorites, but the car doesn't look bad without them. The 60 Chrysler/DeSoto had the best fins that year, the big dodges were ok and the plymouth... lets not talk about that. The 60 imperial was my favorite of the era by far too.
The 60 Plym had the 3rd biggest fins & wasn't a Land Yacht. If you got a '61 Plym & put '60 front clip on it, it would look like a definned '60.
Ahhh sorry George, they just are not as much my thing, not trying to take your car down at all. Something about the shape just doesn't rank as high for me vs the the chrysler and dart.
I was driving this jet in 1962 and even then I was a little self conscious of the fins but couldn't resist the sonoramic intake.
