History 1958 ford fairlanes

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 53vicky, Nov 10, 2010.

  1. There is a project 58 ford fairlane 500 for sale by me and i am seriously considering buying it just cause it is such a deal. however, it needs work and is a 4 door. But i would still think it would be fun to make kinda a mild custom out of it.
Anybody out there with one? how is finding parts for them?
    could i see some pictures?
    especially of 4 doors.

here is what it looks like.

    thanks

57/58 fords are hot, mild custom so/so on this idea, but a modified street rod style would be asume, and lots of parts areavalable so fairly easy project

there is one down the road for sale but its a damn two door & cheap.
    "and the bowtie rolls on"

  4. I like a '57 better but a '58 would do in a pinch. Parts are easy to get!

  5. I like your '53 even better.

  6. thanks guys.
yeah im gonna keep my 53 forever just cause it was my grandmothers first car and she saved it forever and gave it to me, so that car is going nowhere.

ecs - yeah i was thinking paint it the same color, make it mostly original, but throw baggs on it, maybe bellflower tips, and get some cool pinstriping on it. but other than that mostly orig.

I just got a '58 fairlane 2 door and I love it. Can't really chime in on any advice since I just got mine but I like 4 door cars and think theymake really cool customs.

Y-Block or FE motor? Nice thing about FoMoCo of this era is later engines drop right in. Only sticky part of the FE is fitting headers, but I'm sure someone makes a set for this app'n. When I did it, there wasn't anything available except those flat cast iron stock things that had the flow of a potato in the tailpipe.

  17. Both 57 and 58s share many parts, 58 has a better steering box and many came with the first year FE motor, lots of aftermarket support including headers, check 57 fords international website for links, and answers to other questions.

I love the 57 Ford but I also dig the 58 two tone schemes. Kind of cool how they flipped it in 58.

The 58 also had a better wiring harness and windshield wiper setup, cowl drains that are steel instead of rubber so chances are that your floor pans are pretty decent.

You can make it look like a 57 if you are concerned about that. They are basically the same car with some different front sheet metal and tail lights.

FPA makes some excellent headers for FE. The trick is to use the 66 fairlane tri-y headers. The ones they make for 57 are just shortys. (link http://www.fordpowertrain.com/FPAindex/headers1.htm

You have to make a notch in the cross member for clearance on the passenger side or you can shim the motor mounts. If you have the engine out already, just notch the crossmember, you won't regret it.

58's are cool..but no one likes em'. I'd take one anyday. In fact, I had a chance to buy one (forgot the model, I think it was a 300 custom) all black with www's and a red and white interior with a 332 for $5000. I just wish I would've had the money at that time.

57-58 same same. Get your parts at the mega part mart. (checker)
They have so many things in stock I was surprised when I was working on the Country Sedan.

  28. The '58 500 side trim is awesome IMHO
Get it, don't drag your feet and miss it again. :p

I was looking for a mustang when I was in High School and this old boy also had a Yellow '58. It was in awesome shape and $2500 I think.
But, No way I would drive an old Grandma car............right.
It had this funny fold up hardtop thing that went in the trunk.
Boy was i stupid when I was young. ;)

  29. ^ haha thats a good story, i always hear of people say "man i wish i would have bought that car when i had the chance" and i really dont want to be saying that as well about this car!
