Bought this car from Montana in 2008. Owner on Reg is "Ron Dare" deceased. Seized 389 engine, but has chromed solid axle. 1964 5.38 diff. Just finished roll bar. New 427 BBC with 8-71 blower, T-400. Fired up on Sept 5th, 2019 Drag srip first pass on new drivetrain Sept 6th, 2019. Does anyone recognize this car from Idaho or Montana?
Solid Roller cam .700 lift, 2 x 1050 Holleys, Iron heads. 8-71 BDS blower driven at 19 over, 14 lbs boost
Partial pass only. Shakedown pass. 95 mph half track. Probably a 11.00. Should do much better next year. This was end of season Friday night drags here in the north. Hoping for low 10's at 130's Worked like a dog to get out once this year. Didn't blow up. Didn't hit the wall. All good. Fired it up Sept 5th. Went to track Sept 6th.

Don’t know how old this thread is but I’d put the Pontiac back in my 69 bird ran 11s stock in 1969 My turbo charged Pontiac 455 runs 9s all day long off the foot brake with a lazy 60ft. Not to mention in those days guys were tanking chebbys out of vetted and dropping in Pontiacs. So period correct would likely be a Pontiac. These days it’s as cheap or cheaper to build Pontiac too with all the stroker kits etc and is bet it get a ton more attention being poncho powered. There’s a sea of Chevy stuff and people get bored with it. It’ll also increase its value nothing sells worse than a poncho w a Chevy in it. awesome car awesome motor just probably not as cool together as the real deal poncho stuff in that car. Just my .02 as long as you love it that’s what matters but a lot of people overlook Pontiacs. But before the Chevy aftermarket took over Pontiacs were whooping Chevy.
Greetings! I owned that car in the early 90s when I lived in Missoula, and in fact sold it to Ron Dare. It came from Utah. I got it from my step dad who'd gotten it from his brother. I was in my early 20s at the time and clueless about what to do with it. It ran when I sold it, but barely. I remember the starter was somehow switched from the column shifter, so you had to turn the key on, then start it by pushing the shifter all the way up. It's on top of the list of cars I wish I'd never sold. Glad to see someone is loving her!!!
Thanks a lot for the info. Just what I was hoping for. The Montana Title says Ron Dare registered it in January 23rd, 1995. He, or someone had started to take the car apart. It was dry stored in a barn, pretty complete. The front straight axle looks pretty old. I don't suppose you know who put that front frame stub on with the Chromed drop axle?? And... was it actually raced at a track? It has a later Olds/Pontiac 1964 5.38 Positrac diff. with aftermarket axles! Pretty stiff gears for a street car. And it had a roll-bar at one time for sure as there were holes and under-floor plates from that. Love to hear more history.
I have no idea who built that car. I'm pretty sure it was drag-raced out at Bonneville Raceway (not Bonneville Speedway) at some point in the '80s I remember my stepdad telling me it had a what he called a "drop out" rear end and it seemed like a big deal to him. I later learned it was actually called a third member when I was replacing one on a '65 Chevy 3/4 ton. I didn't know the one on the Pontiac was posi, and back then I didn't even know what that meant. I don't know any more history on that car, but more important than where it's been is where it's going, and you seem to have given her new life, which is what she deserved.
