    Hi all,
    I have a 55 caddy 331 in for a customer.
It was smoking bad and wouldn’t rev but sits happily at idle once warm.
The motor was bad with a busted oil ring on #1 pot.
Pulled it, fixed it and put it back.
Carby ( carter 4bbl) was rebuilt.
    Hooked it all back up.
No smoke now but still has same issue with not revving.
If you tickle the throttle it will eventually get the revs up but surges real bad.
    Any ideas?
My personal opinion is that the carb is no good.

  2. Is the mechanical advance working or vacuum advance?
I had a similar problem with 6 in my Chevy and it was the mechanical advance

If it's not the carb check a restricted exhaust system.................................................

I also had this problem before. The advance was not working correctly. It was just gummed up and sticking. Like jchev1953 said. Fixed that and problem solved.

And check the vacuum like to the advance make sure it's not obstructed or leaking. For that matter check the carb for air leaks at the manifold and other areas of the intake for leaks too.

  6. Vacuum leak or bad coil/condensor/point set.
